Wonderful to see a balanced response somewhere.

More police rah rah rah. He said nothing of substance and didn't address the real issue of police on citizen crime.
"balanced" lol

He acknowledged the existence of that, which is a good first step.

That is a good article in my opinion.

The Eric Garner situation is hard to understand in terms of effective policing. The guy who put the chokehold on Garner has already been sued three times since 2012 -- now it's number four. If I was running a company and the same guy kept getting us sued over and over, good management would demand that I take swift action. An employee like that is not only wasting time and money, they are generating a tremendous amount of ill will. And then ultimately, someone loses their life over something incredibly trivial and unnecessary.

Even if Garner was guilty of selling loose cigarettes, there was no reason for a bunch of guys to wrestle him to the pavement, put an arm around his neck and a knee on his head. And it is totally inexplicable why he was not given resuscitation or emergency medical treatment.

That is simply not effective management. When you've got your people out on the street every day, they need to be building trust and rapport.

Seems to be good as far as a generalized article goes. It might have been nice for him to list what he thought we might do going forward. I imagine he was being careful so that he didn't get ostracized by the rest of the law enforcement community.

That def doesn't look good for that NYPD cop. He's been sued 3 times in 2 years?! Def NOT good and he needs to be taken off the force IMHO.

You'd have to know what balance was before you'd be able to recognize it in others.

I think legally when you keep using an employee over and over after you are on notice that he is a problem, it is considered conscious indifference to the outcome. So you can get ripped for punitive damage and so forth.

It is just not good business to keep sending out somebody who is constantly causing trouble. Sooner or later something seriously bad will happen and at that point you are up the creek.

Total agreement. No real solutions offered.

We need to hear them... we need to unite... diplomacy is part of the answer... that's about it.

But I guess if you start off with guns-a-blazin' with a bunch of ideas - it's probably too early for people to handle it. So maybe there needs to be a bunch of blather early in the discussion.
