CDC Study: Use of Firearms For Self-Defense is

Quote:
(CNSNews.com) – “Self-defense can be an important crime
deterrent,”says a new report by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). The
$10 million study was commissioned by President Barack Obama as part of 23
executive orders he signed in January.

The Institute of Medicine and the National Research Council released the
results of their research through the CDC last month. Researchers compiled data
from previous studies in order to guide future research on gun violence, noting
that “almost all national survey estimates indicate that defensive gun
uses by victims are at least as common as offensive uses by criminals, with
estimates of annual uses ranging from about 500,000 to more than 3 million per
year.”
And that's from the CDC! If that news source isn't good enough for you, go read the actual report. When people like yourself choose to ignore legitimate facts or pretend that they are "fabrications" just so that they can avoid having to acknowledge them, well, my blood boils. Cease and desist.

Those conclusions are mostly based on research by sociology professor Gary Kleck, especially his 1993 survey study of self-defense. First, there are several problems with Kleck's study, and other studies have estimated the number of "successful" uses of self-defense with a gun at ~ 108,000 a year.

And a later study on firearm defensive use reportedly found that statistically speaking:

for “every time a gun kept in the home was involved in self-defense or legally justifiable shooting, there were 4 unintentional shootings, 7 criminal assaults or homicides, and 11 attempted or completed suicides.”

Response to Kleck : Article Summary : Articles : Firearms Research

Let me try it one more time.

(a) I haven't said anything about changing the law.

(b) In my opinion the problem lies with the careless and irresponsible use and storage of firearms. We could do a LOT better with that. (As I have pointed out in many previous posts). There are way too many knuckleheads out there messing with guns, often in places where they expose the rest of us to death or grievous injury.

And you propose doing this how, stop being exposed to knuckle heads with guns?

Er, I can see you haven't been reading my posts at all, since I've specifically commented on this in detail several times.

Instead of me typing it out yet again, why don't you just read back?
