Because they were lied to about weapons of mass destruction. We destablized a country for no reason. Just think, if we could have let well enough alone I don't think the extremists would be coming after us.
You know very well they were not lied to. They were presented the best information available. They all had the responsibility and the power to oversee the CIA and the groups investigating this matter. And the fact is, there was a history of weapons of mass destruction being constructed in Iraq, which is beyond dispute. In fact, it appears that they likely moved the weapons out the country in the face of our increased scrutiny and eventually our impending arrival. And even still, chemical weapons were found by our troops there. Not that you would have been likely to see that reported on by MSNBC or any similar left leaning "news organization".
Make no mistake about it, the only liars here are the ones who continue to try to shift responsibility away from themselves and their actions on this, and those who continue to support those people by doing the same.
The political climate was such and the war mongering so thick, at that point in time, that Bush could have said we were going to carpet bomb the Vatican and there would have been unanimous congressional support. People go crazy, stupid sometimes. You know what I mean. Hang the wrong man, stone the wrong virgin, drown the wrong witch or start the wrong war. Which is exactly what we did.

Natalie is right that Bush and his grisly war gang lied through their teeth--but about everything, not just what WMD programs were current. But you are right that it is no excuse. The lies were not so artful that they would've fooled anyone who wasn't desperate to be fooled.
A government seeking a pretext for a war will always lie to achieve it--if you wish to call that an allegation of "conspiracy", make the most of it.
