Trump wants to privatize air traffic control.

I can see it now..

Walmart is the lowest bidder.

They pay $11/hour, no benefits and a phony 401k.
Do you want the lowest bidder running the skies?
We won't need to worry about terrorist attacks.

When PATCO was axed, sky is falling left rants came same way.

We've had fewer accidents since PATCO was properly fired en masse.

Canada has done it, and it seems to work out ok. The devil will be in the details, lets see what those are first shall we?

Reagan was the one who preliminarily dismantled it, right?

Amazon might win the bid and install robot air-traffic controllers. Then Tesla could convert the aircraft to entirely self-flying. It's the electronic age. Mishaps would be no more likely than malware infections and computer crashes. What could go wrong?

ATC is very overpaid. Given that one of the two parties sees hiring more civil servants at a higher cost as part of their mandate you need privatization. If it wasn't for that you could keep more government work in house responsibly, and in fact it would be the more financially responsible thing to do (since no private capital would be taking a cut). Unfortunately, that isn't the world we live in so outsourcing is the way to get and keep costs under control.

Job can be done by computers now. I see no problem with it.

As a pilot and flight instructor I don't see any problem at all with this. I can see where we are very close to replacing air traffic controllers with robots or computers.

Air Traffic Control, exactly what his their responsibility? I know the answer to this, do you?

IIRC -Air Traffic controllers are supposed to regulate air traffic in congested areas and long flights to prevent aircraft collisions. I can see computers providing assistance for the controllers but not replacement.

The only overpaid government employees I know of are most Congressman and Senators as well as our current President. Most of the rest have traded poor private sector wages and benefits for job security, health care for them and their families and, if they last long enough, a decent pension. I cannot fault them for that. At least they did but the Republicans have probably changed that.

Some of the smaller airports already have private ATC towers. I don't necessarily think all ATC needs to be privatized, but it should all be self-funded. Those who don't travel by air should not have to subsidize those that do. Package delivery can charge a fee for air shipments. ATC should not be a part of the general budget.
