Would someone explain to me, why when our gas has gone way down are food prices still rising.
I'd been shopping for years now, and as a woman, of course I go where food prices are lower then most.

Well, they just closed down a store that I shopped at every week, whose prices on most everything were lower then even Walmart. Since Walmart has put in their Superstores, their prices have climbed.

And to boot, when the gas kept going up, food prices climbed, b/c of gas prices, but now gas prices are low, but they don't lower prices, why? Why do they keep raping the people?

Can anyone answer this question for me?

Cattle herd levels are low due to ongoing drought in the west. Produce prices have also been affected by the ongoing drought in California. Lower supply means higher prices.

creme? I am the shopper for my household and food prices are going through the roof! I spent $266 dollars yesterday and was amazed at how expensive especially produce is!
$5 for a pineapple! I didn't buy it!
$2.99 for one green Florida Avocado! (We used to have a Avocado tree in our backyard in Miami where the tree produced so much we used to give it away to our neighbors for their Mangos!)
$2.37 for 2 Tomatoes
$3.49 for Romaine Hearts (two stalks)
and the worst?
$4.99 for 8 Granny Smith apples!

Oh and this was at a Publix store.

Big drought problems in California and the midwest affect produce and cattle herds. The pork industry has a problem with a virus making the pigs sick. Higher fuel costs were only a part of the current higher food prices.

And producing food is making months in the making. Growing time for vegetables and fruits. In the midwest, because of the drought, there was less hay grown to feed the cattle so some farmers sent their cattle to slaughter early, so now there is a shortage of beef cattle.

There are more restrictions in how much fishing industry can take in.

And now egg prices are higher due to California requirements to give the chickens more space to move around in. So larger hen houses have to be built or have less chickens within the existing structures. And more space between chickens means more heating is needed to keep them warm in the wintertime.

Time for people to plant their own vegetable gardens or get together to have a community garden, have chickens in the backyard for eggs and to eat less meat protein. Plant some fruit trees too.

City people can have gardens on their roofs. My parents did when we lived in NYC. Or have some planter boxes in their windows.

Drought indeed!

Farmers, ranchers feeling effect of drought : Local

Other regions around the world (including South America, where some of our food comes) also have severe drought:

Current Conditions | Global Drought Information System

You can't water vegetable and livestock with gasoline.

Do you always jump to the conclusions that businesses are out to hurt people? Has it occurred to you that instead of someone "raping the people" prices are high because of various production costs, market conditions, etc? Fuel cost is only one of many different components that go into the cost of food.

As a point of information according to the USDA Consumer Price Index (CPI) for Food prices in Nov 2014 were about 3.2% higher than the year before.

Beef prices are up over 30% year over year. I guess it depends on what kind of food you buy.
