This jury awarded a man $1 because LE used excessive force. The police officer was not fired or disciplined. Awarding money to those who are abused is fine, but it doesn't do much to address the problem. The police officer cost the city of Austin (tax payers) $1 million, but so what? He's back on the job and ready to do it again. The only thing that will stop this abuse is if those million dollar awards hit LE in the pocketbook.

A Federal jury rewarded an Austin man with $1,000,000 judgement against two Austin Police Officers who used excessive force during a 2011 arrest.

The jury found Eric Copeland and Russell Rose violated Carlos Chacon’s constitutional rights to be protected form the use of excessive force during his arrest. The jury also found Rose’s actions were unreasonable to the point that “no reasonable officer could have believed the use of force during the course of the arrest was lawful.”
