Going back 30 years to the Reagan administration and also under George H. the GOP was always critical of Israel's meddling. That began to change in 2000 when unequivocal support for Israel became the norm even at the cost of a peaceful solution.

WASHINGTON — When former Secretary of State James A. Baker III accused Israel’s
leader this week of undermining the chances of peace in the region, he said nothing more than the kinds of things he had said at times when he was in office a quarter-century ago.
I don't see this as even remotely surprising. The Republicans have been drawn off further and further to the right extreme every year since Reagan's election. It would perhaps be notable to highlight instances where the huge sucking vacuum the GOP's sharp turn to the far right caused in the center drew the Democrats so far to the right that they're now supporting the policies that the Republicans once supported.

Gee, if the majority of the ME is now sitting around the campfire singing Kumbaya with the Israelis there's really no more need for US involvement in the region, eh?

I really don't see that happening, what Israel is doing now is pretty much the same as the 90's but the stakes are much higher. I see in the article where the US suspended loan guarantees to Israel in the Reagan era because of the bombing of a nuclear facility in Iraq and increased settlements, imagine anything close to that coming out of the GOP. Where is the outrage over the settlements.

Reagan said there will never be peace in ME as long as Israel continues to build on occupies territories, and Bush Sr took a much harder line threating to cut aid to Israel unless they stopped.
The current GOP attitude is not "right" or "left", because they do things simply to antagonize the WH.
You think Saudi Arabia is fighting in Yemen in support of Israel.
Remember what Netanyahu stated, the enemy of your enemy is still your enemy.
A good deal of terrorism comes out of Saudi Arabia and they are fighting for their own personal interests not in support of Israel.
It wouldn't matter if "the enemy of my enemy is my enemy's enemy's enemy" - the majority of the Middle East is aligned with Israel against Iran (and Barry's deal).
