The LA Times would disagree with part of your statement - New nuclear weapons needed, many experts say, pointing to aged arsenal - LA Times

But that wasn't my point. The last above ground test of a nuclear weapon in this country was 53 years ago, and I get the sense people have forgotten the truly destructive nature of a nuclear bomb. If this administration is going to let Iran have a bomb, maybe this generation needs a reminder of the ghastly power of a nuclear device.

No loonier than this morning's crop of talking heads positively beaming over how wonderful Obama's talks with Iran were going.

Lightbulb Should the US Resume Nuclear Weapons Testing?

Nope

The fallout from billions of tons of vaporized soil, sand and coral from the 1945 - 1962 tests has completely encircled the globe, depositing radioactive debris into the tissue of all living organisms on the planet for the past half century, from the equator to the poles.

Does anyone have any real question about why cancer rates have soared in that timespan?

We have more than sufficient confirmation that our nuclear and thermonuclear weapons will reliably ignite.

To resume testing in order to frighten a military pipsqueak like Iran would be something so incredibly stupid it would have to come from the mind of an imbecile like Dick Cheney. Fortunately for all of us, that slimey guttersnipe has been kicked to the curb.

Carry on.

People would scream about contaminants in the air...

see, this isn't like people complaining about a minimal amount of fluoride in the water. Nuclear blasts are extremely toxic, and testing these bombs out on US soil is a terrible idea. Why do we need to test them? We know exactly how they work and no sensible person believes Iran will actually nuke us.

Supporters of "testing" think that Obama is a wimp, and by shaking our fists, talking tough, and setting off a nuke, the bad Muslims will quake in terror at our might and back down.

I think you have a screw loose. Fortunately the country screens people who have access to nukes. You can't rant on a message board, but nothing else.

Did we not sign a treaty that limits testing nukes to underground?

The Obama haters are purely schizoid on whether Obama is a wimp or a tyrant.

Conservo #1: “Obama thinks he’s a king. He just ignores congress and tramples the constitution!”

Conservo #2: “Obama is in way over his head. He’s a weakling and has no executive experience. The world laughs at the USA!”

Conservo #1; “No! He’s a tyrant!”

Conservo #2: “No! He’s a wimp!”

The Obamaphobic right should hold a convention and come up with a consistent position on the president and then have Limpbaugh inform all members.

Carry on.

Okay, now some of you folks are just getting odd. You are either deliberately or obtusely missing the point. But that's to be expected around here.
