My cousin is a white supremacist. Like me, he's in his mid 20s. Growing up, I wouldn't say he was the most open-minded person (when I came out the closet at 16, he found it very hard to accept) but he was far from a white supremacist. He became one shortly after turning 18.
He's always rambling about white geniuses . . . from Galileo, to Isaac Newton, to Vincent Van Gogh, to Julius Caesar, etc. He goes on all day long about how great these men were and how they are testament to superiority. Yes, his own superiority as a white male (the ironic thing is he spends a lot of time cheering on black athletes who play for his favorite football team).
This is a guy who hasn't moved out of his parents' place, is currently unemployed, never got the greatest grades at school and spends most of his days smoking pot and watching porn. But when he comes across a non white person he sees on the street, someone he doesn't know a thing about, he thinks he's somehow superior to that person.
Now I know not all white supremacists are like my cousin. However, what I've realized (as in my cousin's case) is that a lot of them simply take their skin color to be indicative of greatness. Falling back on being white is the one thing they viciously cling to, as if it were a novel thing worthy of a Nobel Prize. It almost feels like they are overcompensating (in my cousin's case, this is certainly so).
I find it pretty laughable. I mean, I should feel victorious because both of my parents, who happened to be white, had sex? I should think I'm better than a non white person because I am white, just like Isaac Newton was?
So my question is - do white supremacists suffer from low self-esteem?

That's pretty much the case with all nationalists/racists/religious nuts/extreme social movements. They are usually driven by low self esteem and the need to feel like they are a part of something.
Some of them are actually rather intelligent. Misguided as all hell, but smart just the same. I've had the occasion of talking with some skinheads before and the conversation was rather civilized.
I would say it's a pretty good bet that someone who uses the accident of his birth as an indicator of superiority over others whose accident of birth is different from his definitely suffers from low self-esteem. That would seem to be true of skinheads as well as any other radical group.
I went to HS with a few, rather open white supremacists, neonazis, whatever they called themselves. Many people get caught up in fringe elements in a quest to seek self identity. These are often the types that just don't fit in elsewhere. So, while the whole "white supremacy" thing was a common banner they might rally around, that's where it ended. I mean, there are plenty of white people who say racist things, just like black folks. They just aren't forming gangs to celebrate their thought pattern.
The process of getting wrapped up in this nonsense is not unique to white supremacists. It applied to many fringe element in society.

LOL @ bolded. I am going to ASSume here, excuse me if i am wrong. Your cousin perhaps can only draw stick figures. Does he REALLY believe he is Vincent Van Gogh simply because he is... well... white?
White supremacists confuse me. I have to be honest here.
I know a racist, (his word, not me). What surprises me is that he really likes me. (Maybe because I am mixed, maybe because I listen to what he has to say) I don't know. I don't agree with racist views toward certain minorities, but I have a confession to make, I don't disagree with everything he has to say.
He hates black and Muslims, he also hates CERTAIN Asians (not all, but some specific kinds) He says Asians steal white men's intellectual property and use it against them. Asians are also jealous of white culture, many of them are white wannabe.
Honestly speaking, I understand where the negative stereotypes coming from. I just wish that he can view everyone as an individual. If he likes a mixed Japanese/white girl like me, I think he should give all minority a chance. He also needs to be honest, NOT every white person is beautiful, honest, hard working, talented, etc, etc, etc. If he can be honest about this, then people will take him more seriously.
I think white supremacists can change.
I don't think this guy I know suffers from low self-esteem. I think he is genuinely proud of his heritage. He is a very kind person who is willing to help others (his own people) hehe I have no problems with him, he has no problems with me. but I have to admit, many of his racist rant is hard to hear.
I don't know that I've ever met a white supremacist, but anyone who thinks they are better than someone else based on their pigment (or lack there of) has issues, imo.

If he is "rambling on" and/or going on "all day long" about any subject, he sounds obsessive compulsive or possibly even manic.
You should be looking into psychiatric help for him, not starting threads about him.
