Here in MA cops aren't allowed to smoke. In some departments they aren't allowed to have beards. They knew this going in and chose to give up certain rights to get the job. The department in question here requires officers to salute the flag.
Yes, but none of them are saluting in the way required by their department. Which leads me to believe that it's not all that enforced.

I refuse to recite the pledge of allegiance too. Pledging oneself to a piece of cloth is jingoistic nonsense. We have far too much of this kind of BS going on at events in the US. We are NOT that great a place anymore, if we ever were.
The simple fact that we can have this debate and exercise our beliefs here put us above most countries.

what countries are no longer free anymore....
There are many countries that are free and can exercise their beliefs, so it no longer puts us above other countries....
Hong Cong

Note that the woman in question is not the Chief of Police, but assistant.
Odd that the article states that "Fraternal Order of Police President Javier Ortiz" attended the promotional event in order to film Ms. Najiy. Oh, and Mr. Ortiz says that he has 'heard rumors' that Ms. Najiy is Muslim, although he 'respects her religion'.
Here is the link to the Miami Herald paper about protocol:
Fraternal Order of Police President Javier Ortiz was, in the last link, throwing a literal fit over plans to strip the Miami Police Department of its power to investigate police shootings, and have an independent body do the investigating.
Google Mr. Ortiz. He seems to be a bull looking for a China shop. No wonder he, reportedly, went to this ceremony for the purpose of filming Ms. Najiy.
No better place for a Muslim sleeper to hide is in full view
yanno, I've said this how many times in these forums, and all you get are smart remarks, it is amazing, how unintelligent America is...we learned this in high school, high school, that they would come to this country, told to blend in...smile and dress like us, and work jobs, and start applying in our law enforcement, our politics, etc....but when you tell people this, they are so in denial...afraid to believe that another 911 could happen?
And then Bush gets up and says he takes the blame for American Hostages being killed, but hey, he reminds us, that a drone just killed ISIS leaders....
Well, when a terrorist leader is killed, another takes his/her place, so what's the big deal.
While wearing the uniform your oath trumps your religious beliefs. If you can handle that then you take of the uniform.

I'm sorry, but they, and when I say they, I'm talking all peoples from other countries....
If you want to live here, then you need to become a citizen, speak our language and adhere to certain things.
This really has to stop, then she should loose her job. I'm sorry....but the Pledge of Allegiance makes up the fabric of this country....
This is nuts...we knuckle under to everyone else's beliefs....? This has got to stop....enough, is enough!
Anyone who is dedicated to protect the public and our laws, and yet, has the nerve to protest in such a way publically, should not be allowed to serve, period.

You may wish it to be so, but that does not make it so. But no matter what your prejudices are:
NO JOB IN AMERICA - especially a job where the employees are sworn to support and protect the constitution can compel you to violate that same constitution. It was settled back in 1943 by the Supreme Court that NO ONE IS COMPELLED to recite the Pledge of Allegiance.
