I have a question.... so why then does the US give special treatment to the Native Alaskan's? as you say lock stock and barrel... then why do they do this?
Every Indian tribe is given "special" treatment. They have always been sovereign nations. This is 2015, not 1831.
Also, there is little to suggest that residents of Hawaii were properly educated on the process or understood the importance of the plebiscite and what rights were available to the population. /
Essentially you are saying that Hawaiians in 1959 were ignorant and not qualified to vote for their own destiny.
As the state insists that 94% of the voters voted for statehood, nowhere do they mention that of those eligible to vote, only 35% actively voted for statehood, as most Hawaii residents did not vote.
so.... the voter TURNOUT was 35%.... still 94% said statehood over non-statehood independence
heck most of our POTUS elections only have 50% turnout....1996 bill Clinton won re-election very easily... but we only had 49% voter turnout (49% of ELGIBLE voters decided to vote at all)
I was stationed in Hawaii for the three years, that island is absolutely crawling with military personnel. Many local Hawaiians rely on the military for their livelihood, and while I understand why they don't recognize what the U.S. did in securing this island as a territory, then state, I'm not sure many Hawaiians would want to break ties with the U.S.
But this state could become its own country and rely on tourism and agriculture to a large degree for its economy, and survive secession.
