I love dogs. But If I ever saw a large dog run towards my children in a determined manner (you know what I mean) without very obviously being playful (e.g. a toy in it's mouth and wagging tail), I'd shoot it without hesitation if it got too close. An aggressive large dog can cause lots of tissue / nerve damage and blood loss in a very short amount of time.
It's the owner's responsibility to make sure the dog is on the leash. That woman is an idiot.
Those people are so pathetic. I know the type all too well. My neighbor's car is absolutely plastered with those stupid dog stickers (ie "who rescued who", "I love my labradoodle", "dog is my copilot", "rescue mom", etc), and she is the first to say she'd save a drowning dog over a drowning child.
There is a very, very deep circle of Hell reserved for those boneheads.

But the overzealous animal lovers will be along soon to chime in with gems such as: "If that guy hit my dog I would have hung him and set him on fire, I hate humans, I love dogs."
true. there are too many anti-social people out there that are obsessed with dogs and hate their fellow human beings, who wouldn't think twice about doing something similar. the brainless dog-worshipping zombies walk among us.
We dont know the dog attacked him in that way at all. And if somebody messed with my dog, Id make sure they weren't walking too. Literally. So Im somewhat sympathetic.
My last dog, and she will be my last, was a deaf and partially blind Aussie . A product of irresponsible breeding . That was the only dog I'd ever trust with small children . She gave love unconditionally. Her name was Joy.

Animals tend to enjoy each others company.
