On second thought, I think they should let him go. It wasn't his fault... the evil confederate flag made him do it. Perhaps they should "hang the flag."
I was thinking how the general public opinion will probably be overwhelming in favor of his execution since most conservatives support capital punishment in general, and many liberals would in this case too since it's a hate crime and his death would be like revenge for Trayvon, Mike Brown, etc.
Personally I'm against the death penalty for anyone, and I can just tell by looking at his photos that Dylann Roof is mentally disturbed in some way. I see his action as a manifestation of racial hatred that's been cooked up by the media since Obama was elected. Not to say he's not responsible of course, but I just don't feel like killing him would help advance social justice and many of his victims' families don't want him to die.
Funny how nobody even thinks of mental illness when there is a mass murder, even when there is some blip about a history of it in media reports. Yet, in this case, that was the first thing that people jumped to conclusions about. Wonder why. Any old racist is mentally disturbed in my opinion. That does not make them mentally ill. I am an fervent advocate for the mentally ill, so, under other circumstances, I would think this assumption people are making represents progress - except for the fact that people still do not understand severe mental illness and why those who are afflicted should never be put to death or jailed. On the contrary, I don't see progress in this case. I see people failing to show the normal vengeful, rash judgement that they usually dole out when there is no racial component in the story to trigger them to process things differently than they would normally process them.
Next time there is a mass murder in which there is no racial component, I'll bet nobody speaks of mentall illness. No, they will revert right back to their usual thought processes.
I have to take issue with this statement "many liberals would in this case too since it's a hate crime and his death would be like revenge for Trayvon, Mike Brown, etc.". How's that? How does this guy equate with the police, or Zimmerman? If someone wanted revenge for Mike Brown, then they would want to see a cop put on trial and put to death. Putting this little punk to death can't satisfy anyone's need to see justice (not revenge) served on a cop - or the cop wannabe who killed Trayvon.

It has been noted and discussed in numourous high profile cases. You have an insane desire to label people as racists. That's sad.

Odd, I've made those same arguments more than once.

Go back and drag up the threads on Adam Lanza. There was a lot of discussion on it. Unfortunately this time for some unknown reason the mods have closed or deleted the discussions.

Most of this thread has been nothing more than people spewing hate for others. Not an attempt to find any answers.
Give him life. He'll be much more miserable getting his butt whooped in prison everyday.
