The Supreme Court today ruled 5-4 that the independent redistricting commission in Arizona is constitutional, dealing a blow to the Republican led legislature that wanted more control over drawing the map.
In its decision, the court's majority wrote that overturning the independent commission would go against the spirit of the elections clause.
Quote:
"The Elections Clause permits the people of Arizona to provide for redistricting by independent commission," the decision read. "The history and purpose of the Clause weigh heavily against precluding the people of Arizona from creating a commission operating independently of the state legislature to establish congressional districts. Such preclusion would also run up against the Constitution’s animating principle that the people themselves are the originating source of all the powers of government."
Wow this is great. Most articles didn't seem to think the justices would allow this. This takes at least a little power out of the hands of the two worthless parties.
Agreed but remember, it is always gerrymandering when you don't agree with the results of redistricting.
No, it's always gerrymandering when it's gerrymandering. Whether it's done by the left or the right, it's wrong. I hope this inspires other states to act now. Gerrymandering needs to end. Period.

Anyone want to guess who dissented? It's been a bad month for Republicans.
Fixing the gerrymandering of districts is not partisan Republican or Democrat thing, As if you want to pretend democrats do not gerrymander their districts into contorted shapes to win elections.

I never said that. I agree, both sides do it. But this case was brought by the Arizona GOP because they wanted to thwart the voter-approved independent redistricting committee.
