I think many, including churches, cross the line when it comes to political speech. It little behooves any organization that gets a break from taxpayers to vilify some of those very same taxpayers.
I also think that, when it comes to property, that a distinction should be made between property that is used by the organization to further its own organizational growth, and property that is used to serve the general public in some way.
If the church does charity work (soup kitchens, etc)then they could get tax exempt for that. However many churches don't do much except raise money and do things like buy mansions for the minister/Oman/rabbi etc. Those religious organizations should pay taxes. Many years ago in the paper they talked about Louis Farrakhan buying a fancy car like a Mercedes and not paying taxes because he claimed it was for the Nation Of Islam. Another minister was fleecing his parish members and buying a mansion.
Churches, associations, press, and anything to do with guns should all be tax exempt. Let a thousand exemptions bloom, in my view.
Tax Washington DC, now the wealthiest region in the US, to make up the difference.
