its the same as many things in society. Children were a necessity for survival in the past .There was no one else or even government that keep you alive without family unit. Same as why males with more strength were more valued. But in western world where you can survive without do anything its changed thinking in some. They basically do whatever turns them on. Nursing homes are full of reject family of all ages as well as other institutions.
