By early afternoon, however, a multitude of reports from the ground suggested otherwise. Instead of hitting Isil, Russian jets were said to have dropped bombs on two locations in Homs province, three in Hama and two in Latakia.

All of the targets were non-Isil rebel groups, including those supported by the Western powers. The SU-24s were in action not in Isil’s stronghold in eastern Syria or against Raqqa - the movement’s de facto capital - but in areas where Assad’s forces have been under severe pressure from the insurgents.

The suspicion immediately arose that saving Assad – not destroying Isil – was Russia’s main objective.

They're trying to protect Assad's strongholds around Latakia(and their bases). ISIS or ISIL is on the other side of the country and Assad doesn't really spend much time fighting ISIS to begin with--it's rare that the Syrian Army bombs ISIS targets. ISIS is basically needed by Assad because as long as they're around no one will want to support the other rebels either.

Syrian people were among the nicest and most hospitable I met in my travels, it's a shame what happened to their country. Too bad the Turks and the Saudis and Iranians and Iraqis (and US and EU and Russia) are so willing to fight a war by proxy on their soil.

Yes, many Syrians are warm and hospitable people, and their land is filled with antiquities that cannot be replaced. But they -unfortunately - live in the shadow of what their government does.

Syria was a tremendously destabilizing factor in the Lebanese civil war - through its proxies. Syria was fully complicit in Iran's murder of 241 U.S. Marines in October 1983 in Beirut. Syria's proxies were among the very first to emulate Iran's use of the suicide bomber from 1981 onward. And Syria was willing to be Iran's proxy in building its nuclear weapons in the early 2000s. Syria was the first country I ever learned about where Black and Decker power tools were being used by the government as... (wait for it...) interrogation tools.

Obama had it right when he laid down the 'red line' about the use of chemical weapons. Unfortunately, he screwed it up from that point on. Hence, so many innocent Syrians are either dead or refugees.

And now, the Russians step in to reinforce the al-Assad regime - the very regime that brought such horror to the Syrians. So naturally, Obama's SecState seeks 'deconfliction' meetings with the Russians.

There are so many things wrong with this picture...

His goal is NOT humanitarian, world peace, and/or middle-east stability or security.

This is what happens when the US removes itself from a global leadership position and pulls back from the world stage - when the US does not make decisions, others make decisions for us, and they will be decisions that hurt, not help, our country in the long run.

Yep, elections have consequences.

Not relevant in this conflict actually. Do you seriously think any Arab rebel faction is going to take proxy assistance from the jewish enemy state?
The Israeli's are sitting this one out and simply sealing there borders. Any outcome is bad, but they are prepared.
