“Since the announcement that President Obama may be in the Roseburg area on Friday to meet with the families that lost loved ones at Umpqua Community College, news outlets have been announcing that the President was not welcome in Roseburg,” the statement read. “These announcements have included alleged quotes from community leaders.
“... We wish to be clear that Mayor (Larry) Rich, City Council (Tom) Ryan and the Roseburg City Council welcome the President to Roseburg and will extend him every courtesy,” the statement said.
City councilor Steve Kaser, who oversees the southeastern quadrant of the city, said he was “appalled” by the comments made by Jaques.

People think Oregon is all democratic, liberal and pro Obama.
It's not. (Well maybe Portland is)
Outside of the bigger cities, Oregon is moderately conservative and very much Libertarian.
Obama doesn't make people weak in the knees here, no matter what out of state liberals claim.
I can understand the people of Roseburg getting upset if Obama comes to town, spends a few minutes giving condolences, then uses the moment for political grandstanding.
The media has already tried to completely roast their much loved and very popular Sheriff.
IF Obama just came to town and spent some time with the people and then took off without speechifying, that would be all right with the people of Roseburg.
The people talking crap about Jaques should just get over themselves.
He is actually correct this time.
Extremist conservatives are control freak fascists. They think they speak for everyone because they would prefer not everyone have a voice. Some extremist conservatives don't like Obama. Oooh--what a suprise!
He's the POTUS. You don't like it--tough--get over it.
If the families do not want to see Obama, they don't have to see Obama. The low-class conservative newspaper guy can go fishing (or somewhere else).

The President is there to offer his condolences privately to the families. They are not required to attend. However if I was a family member I'd be pissed at this Conservative man. He's making this a public spectacle more than Obama visiting.
Here we are with a whole thread dedicated to this visit that's only news because someone not involved is running their mouth.
IMO, a lot will depend on how he handles the situation. If he shows up and expresses sympathy for the victims, fine.
If he shows up, pulls his usual bottom feeder routine and exploits these murder victims to push a political agenda, the residents should be angry. And the rest of the country should be disgusted.
