In December 1983, one U.S. Navy A-6 and one A-7 were shot down by Soviet-supplied Strela missiles by Syrian forces occupying Lebanon. One aviator was rescued, another was killed, a third was taken POW and later returned.
Also, the same thing that happened in Afghanistan in the 1980s, when hundreds of Soviet and Afghan aircraft were downed with American FIM-92 (Stinger) missiles.
Too bad you didn't read nor understand the OP. Go argue with yourself.
The original post is not clear.
With the release of the report about MH-17, are you talking about a reverse scenario about what the Russians would do if a US system shot down a Russian civilian jet?
Or are you taking about a US system provided to the rebels in Syria taking down a Russian fighter jet?

Thanks for that, yes the later and then maybe the increasing of arms and support to the Syrians as a result.
While it might not be an immediate public affair, the loss the one of their jet fighters will be, someone will take credit. If as someone else tried to turn into a pissing contest said, nothing, this isn't the old Soviet Union and they are going about this much differently than they did in Afghanistan. I'm looking for possible scenarios as to how they'd react, even if not highly publicized.

Scenarios
Russia or USA directly shoots down the other's aircraft.
It will be deemed an accident and nothing else will come from it except some political posturing. Each side still refers to the other as "partners" in combating terrorism.
USA or Russian SAM is used by 3rd party to shoot down aircraft.
Depends upon who shot it. If it came from Syrian government, then nothing will happen. If it came from ISIL or rebels, then expect massive response.
Russia supports Syria, USA supports Rebels, Both are against ISIL.
Key difference.
Putin is no doubt willing to shed Russian Blood to protect Syria.
Obama is unwilling to shed American Blood to support Rebels
Ultimately, because of this, like Crimea & Eastern Ukraine, Putin will prevail.

Nothing will happen at all. The reason is Obama has already made his foreign policy known. The Russians and Iranians will control Syria. We will be in Iraq for a while. Then we will get kicked out of there too. So We will be out of the middle east before you know it. 10 years from now Israel will be nuked like a piece of toast and then we are next.
