Nearly the entire Middle East has no internet communications at the moment. According to the latest reports, three ships in three different regions of Europe and the Middle East, nearly simultaneously dragged anchors and cut three of the main undersea communications cables. Terrorist act or just a fluke?

Third undersea Internet cable cut in Mideast - CNN.com

An undersea cable carrying Internet traffic was cut off the Persian Gulf emirate of Dubai, officials said Friday, the third loss of a line carrying Internet and telephone traffic in three days.

I hear ya. Well it does beg the question, just how likely is it that three (possibly 4 according to some reports) undersea cables could be accidentally cut in three different locations within a day of each other.

Makes folks nervous when an entire region loses 75-90% of its communications ability.

I'll go with accident for the time being, from a weapon system perspective this doesn't preclude launch or defense capabilities whatsoever. Redundancy and backchannel safeguards are plentiful, and satellite communication is more important than cable.

If it is sabatoge, it would have been a stupid and minor act. The damage is just some cost and annoyance.

Unfortunately, low-level, bumbling "thuggery" may very well be what we can expect from some of these folks. Nothing "sexy" or spectacular, just a chronic, on-going series of 'nastiness'.....a shopping-center bombing here, a school bus bombing there-----maybe a little salad-bar food tampering, dynamiting of a busy rail line.....and a little "internet disabling". Nothing 'world shaking', just something to spread general misery, difficulty, and loss of morale and confidence in the 'system'....and VERY hard to anticipate or prevent.

Now why would Muslim terrorist choose to destroy communications lines that would isolate themselves? Oddly, the only three Middle East countries not effected by this are Iraq, Lebanon, and Israel and the most effected happens to be Iran.

After doing a little reading on this, I found some cable maps and bits of information about how these communication lines are installed. When near shallow waters the cables are generally buried so as not to risk being fouled by the anchors of smaller ships or pleasure craft. In addition, most nautical maps have the locations of these cables so ships don't anchor over them and when near shore they will often have buoys marking them. So to sabotage them wouldn't be so easy to access them without substantial planning and equipment even if they are easy to locate.

So with less than one undersea cable outage per year and mostly due to seismic activity, to then have three in three different locations that isolate one particular area of the globe seems odd to say the least. I'm looking forward to seeing some pictures of the actual cable damage that was done. (clean cut as opposed to tension breaks)

Maybe those crazy Muslims didn't want to have their countrymen watching the Superbowl in case someone American womans breast were to leap out of her undergarments?

Of COURSE your conclusion was correct--if indeed it WAS an inside job by "luddite' terrorists, that's exactly what they'd WANT--to spare their "pure" society from outside contamination. These folks would hardly hesitate because they fear it might 'set back' their local area. They WANT to be 'set back', the farther the better, and don't give a "hoot" about the welfare of even their OWN secular governments.
(Assuming, once again, that it WAS sabotage...)
