This same group got the Catholic and Jewish holidays removed from the school calendar.
But now they want their religious holidays ON the school calendar.

And you think my post is absurd ?

Do you think Islam is the only one true religion ?

IMHO NO religion belongs in the public school system..NOTHING.
No holidays, no special prayer rooms, no religious clubs.

That's what religious school is for. That is what church groups is for.

give the kids 20 personal days, and 2-4 weeks of vaca that can be scheduled to their (or their parents) convenience

this way maybe, just maybe we will catch up to the rest of the world
An even simpler one -

school - jan - mar

off - april

school - may - july

off - august

school - sept - nov

off - december

religious holidays during school terms can be excused absences, students responsible for making up the missed work.

Alas, a rational system will not be instituted any time soon...

Please show where a majority of the school would be absent.

That's a really good idea. It took me a minute to process what you just wrote. I think it's excellent. You should speak up!

Personally, I would enjoy the day off.

I would prefer: Separation religion (any religion) from school, work, etc. Keep it simple.

It would depend on the holiday.

Someone mentioned having the Monday after Thanksgiving off for deer (antlered) season. Historically that was the first day of the season in PA (where the poster is from) so school systems would have the day off since few kids would show up in most of the state's schools systems.

Years ago the 2 day doe season was two weeks after that but weren't days off. Again, most schools had an absentee rate over 50% that day among both students and staff. Many school systems finally had school out that Monday.

When I was in college classes ran through the day before Thanksgiving. Very sparse attendance that day. My school system (where I taught) in MD finally started having that as a day off, as well as Christmas Eve, because it wasn't worth even unlocking the doors those days because of absenteeism.

I actually think that we should only recognize Christmas and Easter as set US holidays in public schools.
We should not recognize any Muslim, Jewish or any other religious holidays at all. However, if those students who happened to be Muslims or Jews or whatever...they can have the day off. Kind of like a PTO.

The absurdity is the exact same thing can be said about members of the Christian "group":

Figures...only their religion is the one true religion.
Complain about other religions and then demand that your religion be honored.
i agree with you re religion in the public schools.

In addition to the fact that kids are not just little adults (re: the 8 hour school day), it would be hard to get much teaching done with kids missing random days.
