It requires a HELL OF A LOT more killing. The Indians and Pakistanis couldn't even bother to walk past each other during the partition without killing hundreds of thousands of people, and they WANTED to be apart. Well, at least the Pakistanis did.
I see nothing wrong with new borders, but it's gotta happen organically without western interference.

The Nation-State does not really gel in the Middle East. Lots of tribalism and intra-Muslim strife.
I have come to the conclusion that the best option in Syria and Iraq is to break them up into separate ethnically homogenous states. It is the only way to stop the unending war. Sunnis in Syria will never accept Assad but he is popular with Alawite Shia and Christians. They live in different parts of the country anyway. It would allow minorities in Iraq to protect themselves. The Iraqi army cut and run, leaving the Yazidis and Ba Christians to be massacred to ISIS.

the practicality of fencing off the ME has as much chance as peace does. the fighting will continue as the world ends. Leave them to enjoy killing each other. It's what they do. their religion is their comfort and guideline. The ME makes a good argument that these people evolved from alien life on another planet.
What about the Shia and Sunni muslims. Extermination
Not saying that. Let's be honest though; every time we try to bolster the Sunnis or Shias group that are actually willing to cooperate with the US, they cut and run at the first sign of real trouble. The Kurdish (Peshmerga) is the only group that doesn't take that bs lying down. And they already control NE Iraq anyway.
It's important to remind the choir here that the borders you see are French and British vulturing over the remains of the Ottoman Empire and were modified when they discovered oil in Mosul. The borders are fake, and strongmen dictators needed to iron rule to keep them together.
What we see here is these countries imploding into a multitude of ethnic and religious line. Daesh for example is a religious call, and unifies among ethnic groups. The Pashmerga is ethnic, and unifies along religious lines. It's not clear which is worse or better from a moral stand point.
But what we can say is all these groups have a state backer or they wouldn't exist today. Daesh is certainly no exception. We can say Turkey is a supporter but I believe the USA is as well. Oil is cheap these days, because Daesh is selling it at rock bottom prices, raping Iraqi and Syrian oil supplies. Who does this help? Why the USA ofc, to prop up an ailing economy and bankrupt Russia.
