If a person is incapable of telling right from wrong or is unable to understand the ramifications of their actions do they still DESERVE to die? Keep in mind there is a distinction between deserving and no other alternative. Which I think is the point of this thread.

I don't imagine people would want cancer patients to be killed because they are sick, why do they feel it is alright to kill people suffering from mental illness??? Do they think it is OK to kill a Vet if he suffers from PTSD??? PTSD is a form of mental illness after all......

Precisely. I'm of the thought that no one deserves to die. Sometimes, killing someone is the utilitarian answer, but anyone who celebrates someone's death is far worse than whoever was killed, with a few exceptions. This is not one of those times however. If you wish death on this mentally ill man, you are the bad guy. I won't wish death on you however because I am not an ***hole.

But there are situations in which shooting an unstable, mentally ill person is, unfortunately, the more appropriate alternative. It's tough in cases like this. The gun the man had was fake so he posed no immediate danger, but at the same time, you can't really tell if a gun is fake just by looking at it.

Ultimately, the issue here shouldn't be how the man's death was handled, but how poor our mental health treatment is. This mans issues should have been addressed long before it got to this point and he should have had a venue to easily access that treatment.

Attitudes like yours are a big reason why we have so many untreated people with mental illness. Zero compassion or understanding.
The cops showed compassion by relieving him of his mental pain.

"Officers in April shot and killed a 66-year-old white Vietnam veteran with PTSD."

Is anyone EVER responsible for their own actions anymore? There seems to be an excuse for everything these days.

What do you mean cancer patients or mental illness. Some mental illness is caused by trauma like PSTD and child abuse. Either way they should not be killed by police. Hitler killed the disabled and mentally ill do we really want that for our society?
