I am thinking a terrorist attack. Specifically ISIS or homegrown Jihadis.
The other possibility might be Mexican drug cartel because some of the cartels (most notable Los Zetas) are known for these types of assaults as well, but I consider it unlikely because such an action would really hurt business and would probably bring a US military response against the cartels.
I think this is extremely unlikely to be your generic nut. Generic nuts usually work alone or rarely in pairs. Getting three of them together would be quite a feat. Three suspects tends to imply an ideology and/or an organization as opposed to being really pissed off about a slight.
