"In the 1960s, the more-or-less concurrent rise of Fidel Castro in Cuba and student radicals at home reinforced the stereotype of beard-wearers as America-hating no-goodniks.
The stigma persists to this day: No candidate wants to risk alienating elderly voters with a gratuitous resemblance to Wavy Gravy."
Author A.D. Perkins, writing in his 2001 book One Thousand Beards: a Cultural History of Facial Hair, notes that modern-day politicians are routinely instructed by their advisers and other handlers to "remove all traces of facial hair" before launching a campaign for fear of resembling "Lenin and Stalin (or Marx for that matter)."
"The beard has been the kiss of death for Western politicians ..." Perkins writes.
Well, I respect Abe Lincoln. I don't care for facial hair on most men, but I don't think a beard on a politician whose policies I agree with would change my mind about supporting him.

Yes I do, but I don't really judge people on their looks. And I hope that 'hippy, commie, Taliban' thing was a joke.
Beards, for whatever reason, are not seen as professional. I can understand super long beards, like the Duck Dynasty guys, not being appreciated, but frankly, a beard like Paul Ryans doesn't bother me. Keep it clean enough looking and why the hell not? It's just hair.
I would love to see us elect another bearded president. We haven't had one since Benjamin Harrison in 1893. Though Taft did sport a sweet mustache in 1913.
Rutherford Hayes had the type of beard that made him look like a homeless person you cleaned up and put in a suit.

No. I don't understand this affectation of looking like Osama.
