U.S. jobless claims rise; import prices sharply weaker
The number of Americans filing for unemployment benefits unexpectedly rose last week, but remained at levels associated with a healthy labor market.
..
The increase likely reflects volatility as the data is difficult to adjust during holidays.
From your link:

Still, it was the 45th consecutive week that claims remained below the 300,000 mark, which is associated with strong labor market conditions. That is the longest such stretch since the early 1970s.

Initial claims have been running at 40 year lows for almost a year now. That is a pretty strong signal on employment.

I didn't allude to anything there. What I thought was funny was the "unexpected" which everyone expects in January.

I mean, are you surprised the number is higher ? I wasn't.

In the face of global fears, the U.S. economy is still gaining speed.

American employers added 292,000 jobs in December. Economists surveyed by CNNMoney predicted 211,000 jobs would be added.

For all of 2015, the economy added 2.65 million jobs, the second best year of jobs gains since 1999

The unemployment rate stayed at 5% for the third straight month. That's near what most economists consider "full employment." Unemployment is down by half from its peak of 10

Wages grew 2.5%
Things are going too well. It's time to elect another Republican.
Lets see 1992 recession - Bush senior was President
2001 recession - Bush junior was President
2008 major recession - Bush Jr. was President

Well yes and self-employed but that is a bit hard to do.

absolutely and I'm not arguing about the figure, I just suggested that it's probably a good bit lower than that if we were able to calculate all the people who won't enter the work force

Default The Poor got poorer

The statistics you state do not show that the poorest people making the least amount of money have continued to lose more money.

I'll see your anecdotal evidence and raise you.

"The minimum went to $2.65 an hour in January 1978, $2.90 in January 1979, $3.10 in January 1980"

Recession...

"and $3.35 in January 1981."

Recession...

"The minimum wage was raised to $3.80 an hour beginning April 1, 1990, and to $4.25 an hour beginning April 1, 1991."

Recession...

"The 2007 amendments increased the minimum wage to $5.85 per hour effective July 24, 2007; $6.55 per hour effective July 24, 2008; and $7.25 per hour effective July 24, 2009."

Recession...

Only once in the past 35 years did a recession not follow minimum wage increase and that was in 96' and 97' and that was mainly due to irrational exuberance and ridiculously huge sums of money being spent to fix Y2K bugs.
