I've sometimes wondered about the distinction. This article also talks about the history of the terms.

More ‘Progressive’ Than Thou
By Beverly Gage

But the question of ... ‘‘progressive’’ rests in part upon the contested definition of the term. Does ‘‘progressive’’ suggest an uncompromising fealty to a set of values, like universal health care, abortion rights and opposition to the Iraq war? Or does it mean something more general — say, the belief that government, carefully and wisely guided, can actually do some good?

Interesting comparison here.

A "Progressive" is a liberal who is embarrassed to admit that the label "liberal" applies to him.

More effort to obfuscate liberalism, and socialist beliefs. Hillary is a perfect example of someone trying to get to the left of Bernie, who is an avowed socialist.

Heck when Chris Mathews was throwing her softballs, she couldn't even state what the differences was between a Democrat & a socialist.
Sadly, there is little difference between the two anymore. Former presidents like Truman, JFK, and even Carter were conservatives by comparison to the radical left modern (D's) have taken.

Not sure why my previous response was deleted.

The OP's point was to discuss liberalism vs progressive, the above comment argues they are in fact different, or at least that the party is different based on previous presidents of the party. I simply asked him to explain how and expand the discussion.

FDR, Truman and JFK all supported federal works programs for teens and young adults, and believed they should be fully funded by the government.

If anything, those presidents are to the left of the current Democratic Party at least on the issues of guaranteed employment.

To me a 'Progressive" is one who thinks they know what's best for everyone and seeks to enforce all of their idealogy on others to the exclusion of others views or freedoms. A 'Liberal' s one who wants the nation to adopt policies they believe are good for everyone. I despise Progressives (which are no different from Nazis to me) but I tend to agree more often than not with Liberals.

No different than Nazis, really?

The terms are essentially interchangeable at present in the United States. Using the term progressive makes a historical link to the Roosevelts. Using the term liberal makes a historical link to the Enlightenment.
