If you worked in Manufacturing in the 50-70's you probably know why. To those who were not there pay attention.

Back in the day when the USA was producing steel, automobiles, appliances, chemicals, they were also pumping tons of dirty air into the atmosphere and also polluting our rivers and streams.

Those nasty Democrats and their EPA said to industry hey, you got to stop pollution the air and water.

Big business said, it is too expensive to put scrubbers to clean up the air and besides our kids breath the same air and it ain't hurting us. Yes the air is much better outside of the industry belt than where the workers live.

So what did industry do? They closed the factories in the unionized North and moved South where non unionized companies and Conservative politicians were more friendly to dirty industry.

Then somebody in Big business got the great idea of moving much of the big polluting industry to China where there are no anti pollution laws and wages are much lower than even the pitiful wages in the South.

That's how industry got moved overseas. If you want to blame anybody blame those nasty Liberals who demand that we have clean air and water. The nerve of them.

it goes beyond the regulations though, the unions drove a lot of industry out when they would constantly strike when their contracts were up, and force companies to pay more and more in salary and benefits to the point where companies were put in precarious financial situations.

Unions complain too much. Business got fed up too. Same with H1B visas, instead of let tech workers come here, they outsource the whole think when there are not enough H1Bs here. At least when the H1Bs are here they have to pay for things here.
But lately, I've noticed all the customer service people have American accent, no more Indian accent. Could it be that outsourcing doesn't work as well.

Pollution is not the reason mfg left the US .....

Globalism and all it stands for is the reason why.
Trade barriers came down. NAFTA, CAFTA and now TPP opened the world for business.

Speaking of steel........

This was the first major industry to be impacted by global competition in the 60's.

The EPA was created by Nixon in 1970.

Over time, China became the world's largest manufacturer of steel and a huge polluter.

The US is the second largest consumer of steel.

The down turn of China's economy has impacted their own consumption of steel so they have a huge surplus to unload on the rest of the world. They undercut the competition, impacting the steel market all over the world. Seems nearly every country has or is contemplating new tariffs to better protect their own and/ or eachother's steel industries.

This results in consumers paying more for steel than would otherwise be necessery in a true free market.

This is not an immigration problem.

The American worker costs to much.

Employers pay for what for American workers? Salary, benefits including ObamaCare which has increased costs, a portion of the employee's taxes, in some cases pensions and retirement contributions,... throw in burdensome regulations just to operate... it's too much for many businesses to handle.

What do employers pay for illegal immigrants? Salary. No benefits, no taxes, no pensions, no retirement. Many companies are willing to take the risk.

And Mexico is on it's way to becoming a major global automotive parts industry.
They are also working their way up in vehicle production.

Maybe Indians are not particularity fluent in Spanish.

Most jobs in the broad tech, accounting and medical coding sectors do not require an interface with the US general public.

Yeah, Obabmacare was a BIG cause of this 50+ years ago when it all started happening.

I once asked one of my bosses why the company was building factories in Venezuela (he had just returned to the US from getting a plant up and running there).

His response was this:
"You get paid $5/hour. They get paid $5 for a 10 hour day."

This was 1975 or so.
