Still wondering about this. Is it to milk welfare for all it's worth?? Is it because they also lack common sense thinking skills that it costs a great deal to raise a child?? Is it because they don't understand self-control or birth control in relation to their sexuality?? Personally I have little sympathy for any of these reasons. The movie "Idiocracy" starring Luke Wilson explored this concept in a funny way. The highly educated couple in the movie was debating on whether to even raise one child and the low wage workers were reproducing at a much higher rate with the IQ of the average person decreasing over time, hence the movie title.

Often, not always but often, low income is due to poor life choices.
This is just one more.

I think this is why Planned Parenthood is a great resource for lower income families and people. Many states are cutting back on this resource and your concern is one result. Of course there are many other answers and opinions.

Many poor people are part of a religion where economics is not involved with having children. Having children is, to these people, a blessing from the LORD and not a simple result of having sex without using any form of contraception. In fact this religion until very recently, like last week, considered using contraception to be a sin and an action against the Will of God.

Given that religious culture high birth rates and large families are to be expected. The affordability of these children is not a consideration. Have the kids and God will provide is the word of the Priests of those religions. Poverty, over crowded slums, poor education, criminality are irrelevant so long as the population of worshippers keeps growing.

sex is hard wired, rich or poor. pregnancy happens even when one is on birth control, many people rich and poor do not believe in abortion. being poor does not automatically discount you from having a family to love, nor should it.

Very true.

And sad this has to be pointed out.

Our birth rate is already too low, we'd be more of a stagnating nation with no growth and an aging dependent population if it wasn't for the breeders.

Why don't selfish middle and upper income couples who can afford it do their patriotic duty and have more children?

Steady or declining birth rates and population do not have to result in economic stagnation. The work can be done by a electromechanical slave class manufacturing food, minerals and manufactured goods. Personal services can be provided by the fewer younger people taking care of the elderly. The result is everyone becoming socially and economically more prosperous to annoyance of the previously privileged elites.

I have to call B.S. to this. Most people that are that religious are not looking for handouts. They are hardworking people, usually very frugal, and very devoted to raising responsible children.

Personally, I would have no problem with irresponsible people having children, if not for the welfare state which I have to fund. And the reason I would have no problem with it is that people who are irresponsible would suffer for their irresponsibility and responsible people would benefit. Unfortunately, under socialism (i.e. social welfare state), this is turned upside down: responsible people suffer to benefit the irresponsible.
