Socialism and it's companion (Big Government) always eventually fail. Venezuela is a poster child for government control and socialism and life there just keeps getting worse. Now the government is rationing electricity. This country is in a death spiral but the government has found a way to blame it on the weather. Bernie Sanders would fit in quite nicely.

Caracas (AFP) - Venezuelans are accustomed to severe shortages of oil, diapers and other staple products. But those hoping to buy what they could find got a new unpleasant surprise this week.

They found malls dark and shuttered on the first day of a government electricity rationing regime.

In crisis-ridden Venezuela, electricity is also scarce

As long as oil was incredibly high, Venezuela, which has more oil than any other country, was able to fund enough give-aways to keep everyone happy and the elite rich doling it out rich and powerful. In the meantime, they punished educated and high producers causing them to leave and now that oil prices have crashed, they got nothing....all they can do is try to return to a market economy and get things rolling again. I guess that has a chance when they hit rock bottom and cast aside this failed Socialism experiment.

That's what happens when people elect a bus driver to be their president.

I wouldn't call them socialists as much as thieves (many socialist countries in Europe do well). Any idea how many billions Chavez' daughter has? Same as the likes of Arafat, Abbas, and their families who are swimming in $$$$$$$$ while their people suffer. They're all cut from the same filthy cloth.

This is what you get when you have extreme socialism + major corruption.

Communist Russia fell apart.
Socialist Venezuela is falling apart.

The thing they both have in common is when the house of cards was crashing the average person was the one that suffered the most.

Why would anyone want to elect Bernie who is a self proclaimed socialist? There are so many people in this country that want the Gov. to take care of them from the Womb to the Tomb and they are OK with handing over their rights.

Socialism is actually good for the average guy, that is until the money runs out.

Socialism is terrible for the avg. guy. It's a top down administrative dictat that assumes it knows what's best for you, and what products and how many should be available on the market.

People spent half their lives in lines waiting for basics, for staples, because their economies are centrally planned.

He is right that it's best until the money runs out. The socialist states that seem to be working up to now were all former capitalist states

Declining oil prices certainly have had an impact but this would of happened eventually no matter what, their oil industry is in debt up to their eyeballs because they were borrowing against it to fund things like housing and that famous 10 cent a gallon gasoline. Through mismanagement and lack of funding for the oil industry the infrastructure and development took a backseat. They never reinvested anything back into what the private sector developed. At this point they have run out someone else's money and the private sector in particular those that were already burned once are going to be very leary about investing anything.

Every socialist country has the same problem. Check out the USSR, N Korea and Cuba. Socialism provides the perfect environment for crooks to thrive in leadership positions.

BTW, there are no socialist countries doing well in Europe.
