Because of the low cost of living, salaries often look like much less, but one can do quite well. Compare the cost of real estate in KS to CA. My older son was stationed in CA, I know what costs run there. He was at the prices.

I am just not sure why this matters to anyone not in KS except that a lot of people outside the state don't have a clue and just have a bone to pick with Brownback. CA has SO many problems and I am betting you couldn't find a dozen people in KS that would relocate to CA.

Which city? I am familiar with southeast KS and can better address the "situation" if I know which city you are referring to. There are jobs here. I am living and have lived in another southeast KS city and there are manufacturing jobs available in both areas. More and more are e-verifying of which I greatly approve.

Looking for a job? KS has jobs and we'll have more when we start e-verifying since we have over 55,000 illegal aliens working in our state, many in the manufacturing jobs and some of those manufacturers having federal and state government contracts. Check the cost of living and the crime rates and decide which state is doing better.

Get off Brownback! Sebelius screwed the state and we are trying to recover from that. She screwed the state and then went to Washington DC and we all know how that turned out!
You might be the last of Brownback’s cheer leaders.
All of the unemployment numbers in Southeast Kansas are higher that the state average.

Fort Scott-4.5%
Independence-6.3%
Coffeyville-6.3%
Pittsburg-4.7%
Chanute-7.2%
Parsons-5.3%

Throughout her first term, Sebelius built upon her popularity and in January 2006 was tied for 20th most popular governor in the country.[21]

In November 2005, Time named Sebelius as one of the five best governors in America, praising her for eliminating a $1.1 billion debt she inherited, ferreting out waste in state government, and strongly supporting public education – all without raising taxes, although she proposed raising sales, property, and income taxes.[24] The article also praised her bipartisan approach to governing, a useful trait in a state where Republicans have usually controlled the Legislature.[25]

On May 26, 2006, Sebelius formally announced her candidacy for re-election. Four days later, Mark Parkinson, former chair of the Kansas Republican Party, switched his party affiliation to Democrat; the following day Sebelius announced that Parkinson would be her running mate for Lieutenant Governor.

For several years the FBI called SE KS, the meth capitol of the US. Supposedly there was more meth made there than in Southern California.

Hospitals are struggling because most of the poor no longer get Medicaid, so they use the ER and don't pay. Even Walmart is closing stores there because of the lack of spendable income. The state is broke because they cut taxes so low they no longer have enough income to pay their bills. Even many of his own party are starting to rebel against Brownback. He even tried to cut funding to the courts that disagreed with some of his policies that were deemed unconstitutional. He lost a lawsuit when he tried to cut school funding below what the law allows. Now they will have to cut more state services to fund the schools.
I lived in Kansas for a few years. It is not really as bad as some people imagine. The median household income is ranked 26th in the US, just in the middle, but housing cost is extremely low.

Johnson County, KS is one of the richest counties in the US. The infrastructure in Kansas is actually good. New buildings, new roads, and new shopping centers are everywhere, especially in the east part of the state.

For such a great economy we sure are suffering with underfunded schools and state colleges, decaying infrastructure and homeless all over the place and constant whining about the need for additional taxes to continue to limp along with the police and fire protection we currently have.

California has never escaped its boom and bust cycles, in large part due to a tax structure slanted towards personal income and capital gains. When the wealthy and Silicon Valley do well, things look great.

I love California, but to claim a democratic governor and legislature have turned California into some kind of economic utopia is laughable.

Brownback put a hold on all road projects. Said they could not afford to do them. You must have missed all the slums in Wyandotte County. That is the other county that abuts KCMO. Crawford, Cherokee and Bourbon are the border counties in SE Kansas. They have been fighting over a casino because they are all broke. They have been closing schools and two Walmarts have closed there for lack of sales.

Every state has good parts and bad parts.
The fact is the household income of Kansas is in the middle of all states, and the infrastructure is not bad. So it's just an average state.

The problems with comparisons like this is large companies doing business throughout a state may be headquartered in the city. Prime example here in PA is the gas industry, tax revenue from those opertions that is primarily in rural areas is not applied to those areas. That's going to apply to the taxe revenue from both the company and many of the employees.
