I'm not a fan of the individual use of fireworks. I prefer the public displays. Every year this sort of thing happens, or someone dies or their house burns down, etc. The pets suffer. My dog is terrified. He'd run away if we didn't help him through the ordeal and keep an eye on him. So many people lose their pets permanently. It's not worth it.
I looked at that picture of the kid on his GoFundMe page. My heart breaks for him.
I blame this on poor parenting. The family said he did stuff like this every year, and everybody got a kick out of it. They just didn't expect him to make one this big. Well, why the heck not? That's what kids do! "Wow, that was cool, let's see what happens when we make a bigger one!"
Here's what the mother had to say -
Quote:
“If you knew Rowdy and how wonderful a child he was, you wouldn’t want nobody to go through this,” Hansen said. “Protect your children. Anything can happen.”
Yeah, lady, that's exactly what you should have done - protect your damned child. Because you're right, anything can happen. And it did. He's a kid, he didn't know any better - you're a grownup, you're supposed to know better. That's what parents are for, but you didn't do your job, and now your kid is going to go through his whole life missing a leg and several fingers, and probably at least partially blind. And it's your fault for not being a parent.
Edit: What does this have to do with politics, though?
Dude is in critical condition right now. Hope he pulls through.
Gosh this is sad.......my prayers go out to him and his family. One would think his parents told him the dangers, yet some kids do find out things the hard way.
I feel horrible for that poor kid. I can see myself doing something that dangerous when I was that age, so I won't condemn him. 15-year-olds, especially boys, seemed to be hard wired for danger. That being said, we can't, and should not, try to legislate total safety. The world is a dangerous place.
I tried, with substantial success, to make black powder, sulfur /zinc rocket fuel and thermite (sparkler coating) when I was a kid. The BP was not all that effective because I left out the damp mixing and sizing step. The rocket fuel actually fueled rockets and I welded light railroad rail with the thermite. I never made any really dangerous explosives because I could not afford the nitrating acids (concentrated sulfuric and nitric) required. Now I found out that explosive peroxides can be made from light hydrocarbons, strong acid and hydrogen peroxide.
I did not do any of this with parental awareness or permission. I had a shop and my step father was mostly wrapped around a bottle of Jack Daniels.

We almost bought the farm with a home made potato gun. A fence pipe capped on one end filled with lighter fluid.
