Exactly. When the cost of doing business goes up, the costs get passed along to the consumers. We see that with brick and mortar stores already. Businesses in areas with high rents charge people more than those with low rents.
You also have to consider that manufacturers sell to other countries as well. The tariffs would have to be high enough to offset what they'd lose in sales to the rest of the world. They could potentially set up a US plant for US sales, but that's a huge capital investment to counter a tariff that could potentially be repealed in 4 years.
If Trump can bring back manufacturing jobs without hurting consumers, I'd love to hear how he would do it.
Personally, I'd love to hear how any of these folks are gonna do it. It used to be religion that was looked upon with skepticism with the leaps of faith. Now? Politicians & Economists are (rightfully) accused of trafficking in untruths. Where is the Invisible Hand?
The world's economy is an international game of Monopoly. The endgame of Capitalism is similar to the endgame of Monopoly.
& please tell me bringing back convict labor isn't part of the gameplan?
The board game Monopoly was originally invented in the early 20th century to warn players of the dangers of free market capitalism. However, there was The Landlord Game“ — Monopoly’s predecessor — that was made to show how property owners exploit their tenants with exorbitant rent. The game eventually evolved to include rules that let players charge higher rent if they owned all the railroads or the utility companies. But the endgame scenario of Monopoly is a lot like the endgame of capitalism that we’re witnessing today — no matter how the game starts, the wealth will eventually accumulate into the hands of one player while the other players have to sell off their property to pay their debt to the owner and eventually lose everything they have. ...

I think Trump will seek to lower the corporate tax rate, which is among the highest in the world. If you incentivize corporations by creating the environment and then showing them they will make more money by staying here, they will stay. Money talks.
Obama right now is promoting for corporations to "Enable Employ and Educate" the unvetted refugees that are coming into the US. Clinton vows to bring in over 1 million more just in her first term.
You have to be honest with yourself and say that it really would be nice if this Administration would do that for some of our communities. Even those buying into the anarchy being created by Soros' money have to admit that.
Corporations are going to provide them with funds to live, educate them and employ them. How I wish they would do that for American citizens who really need it.
Trump's stance is that he's not going to let people leave in the first place, bringing anything back would be harder, but Trump has promised to make it really hard on companies who leave and who have left.
But how do you prevent companies from leaving, how exactly would he prevent them from relocating overseas, a tariff?
Once automation really takes over, the US will start resembling a third world country because so many people will have no jobs and will be homeless and starve.
No president can stop this inevitability.
If we reduce our ridiculously high standard of living, develop our local economies, local food and energy production, we can be OK for many decades. We ARE OK even now regardless of what politicians want us to believe.
Most of the jobs that have gone have either been automated or off to places in the world where the labor force makes $1 an hour, bringing those jobs back sounds good in a political speech but in actuality would necessitate a major price increase in any product if the company had to now pay its workers $20-$30 an hour if the company returned to the USA.
Pay more for something that is manufactured here with our steel and our standards and quality control. Or like it has become. Pay waaay less for cheap products with cheap materials that dont last. What would you want. I can remember having a vehicle for 10+ years and not having to replace a headlight or any light bulb on the vehicle. Now I see 2 year old cars with headlights and other bulbs out, because of the cheap china made parts with cheap materials. Its not just bulbs, its hundreds of parts on a vehicle.
I use to work for a company that was owned by 2 Chinese guys. Some times one or the other would travel to China to check things out. They would come back and tell us what to check closely on their parts, because there was zero quality control in this factory that manufactured there parts. This wasnt just one factory that operated like that, he did say lots are like that. The majority of these parts from these factories are being shipped to this country, on you car and on things you buy. You can thank our government for letting this happen.
Remember long ago you couldnt afford something you didnt get it. But when you did get it, it usually lasted. Not now, you can get anything you desire, its not made here and it does not last, or can even be fixed if broken. Just purchase a new one.
OP: It already does happen, that some companies have in the past exported their manufacturing process and then brought it back into the USA. That canhappen more frequently, with changes in the laws, but bringing them all back or even half is highly unlikely.
Again...the point is that COMPUTERS AND MACHINES ARE NOW DOING MOST OF THOSE JOBS.
You can't "not let them leave" unless you have a time machine or are some sort of a luddite who is going to destroy technological advances.
Trump is just promising you a bunch of nonsense to get your vote.
You are not exactly correct on this. There are many jobs that have been pushed offshore that can not be automated. Design, Engineering, Die design and making , Mold design and making, Fabrication and Machining. All skilled , higher paid jobs. In the case of Mold making, the Mold shops that survived can actually design and build a mold for less money then China. The problem is , when these large automotive suppliers jumped on the offshore bandwagon they signed into contracts, spent huge amounts of money to set up companies in China to send the work to. So now , even though the cost of a mold is cheaper, they are stuck using the offshored company to do the work because the money invested.

If you want to reduce your standard of living, have fun. Nicaragua is beautiful and you could live like a king on $75k.
