Face it, the right and the left just have fundamentally different ideas of what the USA is what it should be. I am all for making everyone happy by just dividing it into two. Gun nuts in one half, people for sensible gun laws in the other half. What's wrong with that?
The only people who own guns are in the South? A lot of people in the US own guns, not just those in the South.

The only people against abortion is in the South? People against abortion are found all over the US.

The only people who discriminate against gays are in the South? Proposition 22 was where? Oh yes, passed by California voters to restrict marriage to opposite sex couples only. Hell, it passed with 61% voting yes, it was not even close.

Clearly that settlement was incorrect. We have the exact same political groupings that we did in 1865: liberal north and conservative south. The divide after the civil war never healed.

They wouldn't listen and now they've painted themselves into a corner.

How does one compromise with an armed thug imposing their will upon them? Both parties use government violence, aggression, and coercion to impose their personal whims upon their neighbors.

In reality the "left" and the "right" do compromise. They both agree to be evil thugs and tyrants towards their fellow man instead of allowing people the freedom to interact peacefully and voluntarily. Ah, the beauty of "democracy", the "justification" on one group imposing its will by using thug government aggression and coercion against everyone else.

WOW

The reason we have the 2 Party Problem ?

Maybe go back some 200 Plus years and see that people did not follow George Washington's Advice. Why not listen to the first president, a founding father of a budding nation that brought forth a new form of government such as the world had not seen? Why not take the advice of a man who as president for 8 years, was in the thick and middle of all issues and controversies?

Let us look at this section of his farewell speech in 1791

Without looking forward to an extremity of this kind (which nevertheless ought not to be entirely out of sight), the common and continual mischiefs of the spirit of party are sufficient to make it the interest and duty of a wise people to discourage and restrain it.

It serves always to distract the public councils and enfeeble the public administration. It agitates the community with ill-founded jealousies and false alarms, kindles the animosity of one part against another, foments occasionally riot and insurrection. It opens the door to foreign influence and corruption, which finds a facilitated access to the government itself through the channels of party passions. Thus the policy and the will of one country are subjected to the policy and will of another.

There is an opinion that parties in free countries are useful checks upon the administration of the government and serve to keep alive the spirit of liberty. This within certain limits is probably true; and in governments of a monarchical cast, patriotism may look with indulgence, if not with favor, upon the spirit of party. But in those of the popular character, in governments purely elective, it is a spirit not to be encouraged. From their natural tendency, it is certain there will always be enough of that spirit for every salutary purpose. And there being constant danger of excess, the effort ought to be by force of public opinion, to mitigate and assuage it. A fire not to be quenched
, it demands a uniform vigilance to prevent its bursting into a flame, lest, instead of warming, it should consume.
Avalon Project - Washington's Farewell Address 1796

The problem as Washington warned has come true, People choose to allow the parties to divide, not to unite. Many put the party ahead of Nationalism, the whole "I am a tea partier first" (Does that mean an American second?)

The Very spirit and the very nature of the two major parties seems to be to encourage division and jealousies (aka Mischief making)

The problem will exist so long as we allow political parties to come first and have the power to do so.

Only we the people can change it, and clearly, the majority of we the people so far have not chosen that path.

Politics in America has become hyper-partisan.

It appears it is no longer good enough to respectfully disagree with your political opponent, but to demonize him, insult him, defame him. Both sides do this.

I will suggest, however, that behind closed doors elected Republicans and Democrat officials are more agreeable to each other than the "fighting mad" show they put on in public.

The game of politics in America has become some kind of "war" and it's either win or lose, compromise or truce seems weak or a capitulation.

Politics in America is war because whomever wins uses thug government violence, aggression, and coercion to impose their personal whims upon others. It is a system of barbarity and evil. A system that enslaves one group to the whim of another group. Disgusting, evil, and immoral. Both "left" and "right", "democrat" and "republican", are merely groups of barbaric thugs and tyrants towards their neighbors. Although they always claim to be innocent because they have thug government commit their evil crimes against their neighbor on their behalf...

Why can't the 2 parties compromise??

What good would it do? If you merge Dumb (R) and Dumber (D) all you get it dumber yet, if that's possible! Both parties need to go away and we need a Logic and Common Sense Party.
