But to say that he was mentally ill is actually downplaying the issue. We could say that Stalin or Bin Laden were mentally ill. But they were also evil, as is ISIS. That is my point, as well as the original poster. Theological issues aside.
There is only so far you can go with making excuses & fooling people. You cannot fool grief, hunger, poverty, sickness that people feel. Eventually people will realize the truth, just like Europe woke up & took notice of the evil they were lead to believe could be easily controlled. I hope we dont make same mistakes as Europeans but most likely we will repeat their mistakes.
Evil exists from the beginning when Lucifer tried to be more powerful than God, and has many 'evil angels' (demons) working for him. Evil is very real, it is not mental illness. There is free-will. Evil, and good. People choose by free-will how much to be filled with either one. These that killed the priest were very, very Evil, filled with Evil. The were not mentally ill.
There are groups out there that actively try to recruit and influence mentally ill, substance addicted and otherwise vulnerable people to carry out their agendas like terrorism, prostitution\slavery etc.
The fact that the end actor was mentally ill doesn't change the fact that he got his motivation from the propaganda from various radical sects. Big difference between that and someone that watches Taxi Driver and decides to shoot at the president.
