As many parents do on a hot summer day, Stephanie Felkai took her two young daughters to their local public pool in Montreal. Felkai’s 6-year-old daughter wore her favorite swimsuit shorts without a top. A lifeguard approached Felkai and said that her daughter needed to cover up with a bathing suit top.
Felkai felt this was unfair since the upper body of a 6-year-old — whether it’s a boy or a girl — looks basically the same, and she argued that if young boys don’t have to cover up on top, why should young girls who haven’t developed yet?
“At her age, she’s indistinguishable from a boy,” Felkai told CBC. “Her physique is exactly the same as a boy’s. So how does anyone even know to approach her to tell her she’s not wearing an appropriate bathing suit?”
"I couldn't believe it, so I wanted to test it, to be quite honest."
"My concern for my daughter in my situation is, I don’t want her to be forced to identify as girly too early,”
Borough spokesman Daniel Bussières to CBC that bathing suits are required for anyone going to the pool and that includes tops for women. However, Bussières added that the lifeguard who approached Felkai about her little girl may have been “overzealous” in following the rules.
The mother is right but then again this is Puritan America where nudity is seen as nothing but sexual. My wifes friend is French and she sometimes sends us photos of her family at the beach and yes her young daughter is topless. It is no big deal to us but of course in todays PC America we could be charged with having kiddie porn.
It is pretty sad.
Still the other posters are right that there are some sick people out there so the 6 year old should probably cover up.

Not always. There are cases where perps pick out a victim and act on it later.

Oh brother. The mom filed a complaint over this as if she or her daughter were somehow harmed or their rights violated. The pool has a right to their rules about attire. The child can go topless at home or at a private pool party, but she doesn't have the right to demand it at a public pool. Her chest may be indistinguisable from a boy's at this age but does anyone think it would be appropriate for a stranger, particularly a man, to touch her there? Would it be the same as touching a hand or a shoulder? I don't think so. It's sad that we need to think about sexual predators--who still prey on children with little boy bodies--but that's the world we're living in today.

Maybe, but a pedophile would see a topless 6-year-old girl the same way a non-pedophile sees a topless woman. Why would you want your 6-year-old to be an object of special interest for pedophiles at the pool?
She could have just said she felt like she was a boy that day. Problem solved( or made more convoluted, at least).
