The protests are making a difference. From the increased use of video to actual charges being brought forth in Chicago to things like this.

Baltimore police failed to share misconduct complaints with civilian oversight board; promise to do so now

Baltimore police have agreed to share complaints about officer misconduct with the Civilian Review Board, a beleaguered group created nearly two decades ago to provide citizen oversight of city law enforcement, after the department failed to forward hundreds of cases.

According to a Baltimore Sun analysis, Baltimore police did not forward to the board from 2013 to 2015 more than two-thirds of the police misconduct cases that are under its purview. The board takes complaints alleging excessive force, abusive language, harassment, false arrest and false imprisonment.

Under the agreement facilitated by City Hall last month, police will send the Civilian Review Board all citizen complaints but withhold investigative and personnel files until the board obtains a notarized copy from the complainant. The board had planned to go public with allegations that police were not following the law.

I guess many aren't interested when the police are actually held accountable.

Nebraska Cop Charged with Felony After Video Proves he Never Feared for his Life

Does this mean we are starting to not accept this at face value any longer? It's no longer going to be the go to answer when the cops shoot someone?

Even the prosecutors are now being held liable for their actions?

Making a difference.

Across the country, municipal governments have signed contracts with police unions including provisions that shield officers from punishment for brutal behavior as well as from legitimate complaints by the citizens they are supposed to serve.

That may soon change, as public outrage over police killings of civilians is ratcheting up pressure on elected officials to radically revise police contracts that make it almost impossible to bring officers to justice.

For those who argue for peaceful actions, now is the chance or otherwise it will turn violent. It's up to you.

I will add, it's sad how the NYT's always points out the problems elsewhere and rarely the problems in their own backyard. This is no different than what happened to Eric Garner.

good. i think we need civilian oversight boards in every city. i think we also need more extensive background checks in every city for law enforcement.

There's more en enough oversight as well as background checks for hiring. You just keep tuning in to the media's spectacle of all cops are racist murderers.

you have mistaken me for someone else. as for having enough oversight, apparently not. internal affairs is a step in the right direction, but it is still cops investigating cops. what we need is civilians investigating cops. as for background checks, pretty much only the larger departments, like LAPD have the resources for extensive checks.

We have no clue. Many come back from military duty with PTSD and become police officers. We do not screen them.
