No one in my family will end up homeless unless I am.
I live in Houston and I see plenty of white and black homeless people. Hispanic homeless are much rarer and I have seen a single homeless Asian in my nearly 40 years here.
Many are mentally ill, and unfortunately many of the facilities for caring for mentally ill people have gone away, I guess that makes the problem go away.

Quite a lot of them are the way they are because they consistently have trouble solving the basic problems of day to day life. Over the course of a llifetime, this tends to exhaust the patience of people who are close to them. They've usually worn out their welcome with family members and burned too many bridges by the time they hit the streets.
Depends on ability to do so, and the severity of mental illness. Some times they can't be or don't want to be taken care of. Homelessness is sometimes a choice that the person makes even when provided with other living options.
That is hard for me to believe. I am sure it is true about a small percentage.
I personally know one homeless veteran. He was an orphan, he joined the military at age of 18. I don't know why he ended up on the street, he has a very bad temper, but he is a very proud, good man.
I doubt it is just a small percentage, I think overwhelming majority of them don't have any families. Or maybe they came from very toxic families.
What the heck are the families of the homeless doing?
If the homeless people reside in Hawaii, they're probably calling them on their loved ones' cellphones. Seriously, I've everything from cellphones to dart boards to scooters in homeless camps. Freakin' scooters. The homeless are free to pass the time however they want, but when some of them turn homelessness into a bonafide profession, they eradicate any semblance of sympathy from me. As for other homeless folk, I hope they find a way to turn their lives around, with or without help from their families.
