I have a lot of friends here in Houston who are from Venezuela due to their background in the Oil and Gas sector. When Hugo Chavez first became president, we had many discussions, it was a joke at first and I recall asking my friends why they would vote in a president like that. They made jokes, and I forgot what they said, but it was like they shrugged their shoulders, and thought it was not that bad.

Years later, Chavez started to change the country, changed the name of the country, passed laws to make him more powerful. To us in the US, we saw it as a dictatorship in the making. Then fast forward to today, with current president Maduro, who's past experience was being a bus driver.

For all intents and purposes, Venezuela is a failed state. There is chaos, famine, civil unrest, etc. Their currency is worthless, the US Dollar rules. The problem is that the majority of the people voted him in because of the "free" things he's promised. Maduro and Chavez stole from the corporations when they nationalized them, they just ruined the country from within.

So now people are seeking asylum in the US. Do you think the US should accept them? And if so, why should the US accept them when they voted the people in office that did this? What role does the United States have to rescue everyone who claims asylum, why should we accept them when I see people on all four corners of Houston's major intersections begging, people homeless, etc.?

What do you think?

Asylum for economic purposes is not a valid claim.

2/3 of Hispanics in the US are of Mexican descent. Mexico is hardly a Venezuela.

Considering we already have a Socialist/Marxist leaning President along with his now Socialist Protege promising goodies it shows you dont have to be an Hispanic majority country to have a Hugo Chavez type regime.

But it doesn't hurt when you look at polls of Hispanic viewpoints of support for bigger government and socialism, and they vote majority for Democrats.

When a Democrat wins, non-Hispanic whites didn't get the President the majority of them voted for. This has been true in every Presidential election going back at least till 1976 at least.

What IT is about Hispanic countries? I swear ALL of them are just toxic messes and, "race" doesn't mean squat since Argentina's mostly "white".

Maybe its the language, or most English speaking countries are based on English common law? Seems like most former Engish colonies are at the top, with Spanish colonies coming in a distant second, and Portuguese/ French/ Belgian/ Ottoman colonies/ empire countries coming in that order.
