An Ottumwa teen who plead guilty to raping a child will not serve any time in prison.
Kraigen Grooms, 19 was sentenced Monday by Judge Randy Degeest in the Wapello County Courthouse to served a 10 year suspended prison sentence after pleading guilty to one count of Engaging in a lascivious act with a child.
Grooms was released from jail following his guilty plea earlier this summer. He has been subject to GPS monitoring since his release.
Plenty old enough to know better! He needs to do a lot more. You can never pay back that kind of crime. Poor baby.
Do you even know what the kid actually did or what the judges reasoning was? I haven't been able to find any specifics online. I will wait to pass judgement until I know.
It seems to me that the article is mistaken. The DA offered him a plea deal, they must have either not wanted to go through with a trial or didn't know if they would get a conviction due to lack of evidence or other problems. That isn't the judge's fault. He plead guilty to "Lascivious acts with a child". In Iowa, this is defined as "if a person 16 or over permits or causes a child to fondle or touch the person’s genitals or pubes." Or "if a person 16 or over fondles or touches the pubes or genitals of a child." This comes with a charge of up to 5 years in prison. This is the definition that seems relevant to this case. https://www.ageofconsent.net/laws/io...s-with-a-child
Given that Kraigen Grooms was 16 at the time, a minor and at the lower limit for these charges, as well as the fact that he plead guilty to the charges, it doesn't seem that unreasonable for him to serve 2 years instead of 5.
