That is, the same rights/benefits as married couples do? It appears we've entered a trend where cohabitating partners have no intention on getting married, and may even have children.
What do you think?

How about if the government didn't discriminate based on marital status?
What about the law about courts being unable to force spouses to testify against each other? Should this protection be extended to anyone the defendant claims to be their romantic partner?
No commitment, no legal benefits. State condoned bastardy needs to stop. Kids need both parents.
Kids can have both parents without marriage! To suggest otherwise is lunacy. So its better to date for a month, then marry, then have children and divorce after a year than to live together for a decade and then deciding to have children and live happily together for the rest of their life without marrying? The latter is "bastardy" while the former is "responsible" because the child was born in wedlock after the parents had known each other for a few months?
Some rights should stay and some have no purpose any more.
I.e not being required to testify against your spouse is less likely to be abused than not requiring cohabitators to do the same. That one should stay. Joint tax status should stay etc. State intestacy rules for spouses should stay.
But I also think it's possible for unmarried couples to raise children, and we have a huge population of foster children who would be better off in many scenarios with cohabitators.
