A point to ponder: unless you are the single healthiest individual out of more than 300 million Americans, there will always be a healthier person who is subsidizing your healthcare.
You're right that we only get one body and one lifetime, so the thought of the government regulating your every action -- right down to what you eat and drink -- should be repulsive to anyone who values their freedom.
There is a medical distinction to obesity. This isnt about being the healthiest... it's about making the obese pay their fair share.
And smokers. And drinkers. And fast food eaters. And soda drinkers. And pregnant women. And people who exceed the speed limit. And on and on and on...
We'd all be in it together. Making certain types of people pay more for the same health care coverage is a surefire way to make sure that it'll never come to fruition.
I think some of y'all are getting twitchy because you may resemble my comment.
Or maybe we recognize what a slippery slope it would be. A meth addict can smoke 5 packs a day and guzzle down bourbon by the bottle, but remain thin and "fit."
In this day and age when you can't discriminate against anyone for anything lest your hurt their tender little souls, it seems odd that people are eager to charge someone more for their life-sustaining healthcare because they are one pound overweight. And make no mistake about it, that's what it will come down to: one pound, or a fraction of someone's BMI.

Yep we have higher taxes on booze and cigs. We should legalize weed and tax it appropriately too. We ticket those who speed.
You maybe right, but as long as we have high obesity rates then we will all pay more than we would otherwise.
The current system works fine if you are eligible for medicaid, if you are a lowering income working person, if your already on medicare or if you get enough or if you get enough subsidies on a modest income that you can afford your healthcare.
But the people who are getting killed in this deal are small businesses and individuals who make just a little too much to get any of these subsidies. Why? Because they are not organized, they don’t have any bargaining power with insurance companies and they are getting WHACKED why? So you got this CRAZY system where you got where 5 million people have healthcare and you got
people out there bussing it working 60 hours a week wind up with their premiums doubled and their coverage cut in half.

Obesity is a preventable medical condition. I see no slippery slope but making those who will use more in resources pay to do so. Don't want to pay more then don't be obese.
