At least he wants to work, I'd bet some would rather take the check and do those menial tasks or sit around doing nothing. Perhaps some of these types of people are unhappy this guy highlighted his plight and shined a light on what's going on.

Teacher who earns $94K to do nothing sues city to get back to work | New York Post
Quote:
A teacher who sits in lounges and libraries doing nothing all day — sometimes even napping — is challenging the city to make him earn his $94,000 salary.

“I come to work every day, sit down and do nothing,” said David Suker, who spent 15 years helping “at risk” teens in The Bronx earn a general equivalency diploma, or GED.

Suker, 48, complains he is “warehoused” in the Absent Teacher Reserve, a pool of educators without permanent jobs that costs an estimated $100 million a year. Right now, there are 1,304 mothballed city Department of Education staffers in the ATR.

End govt education. A private school would use the teacher or let him go and the salary would go to something productive.

There is a reason he's in that program.

He was fired years ago after clashing with cops during occupy Wallstreet and won his job back through appeal. He is a vet who suffers from PTSD and most recently was rushed by ambulance to the VA hospital for a panic attack after clashing with the principal's secretary.

I smell a money grab.

Since this guy is tenured, they are pretty much stuck with him. Blame the teacher's union.

Ah yes, the infamous "rubber room." Nice work if you can get it.

What is wrong with us as a society?

Yep, sounds like a big liability if you had him among students. Don't blame the union, their job is to benefit their members. They do pretty good at that.

Blame the people who sign on to the union contracts.

I wish I had gotten that deal 50 years ago. I would have used the time, even in a school, to set up and operate my own writing business while being available for teaching school if needed.

i knew this was new york before i entered this thread. and yes DO blame the unions. they have virtually eliminated any possibility of firing teachers in new york, even for cause, so this forces the school system to put these teachers in a warehouse, essentially, and pay them for doing nothing.

I don't mind donating his salary to “at risk” teens

Someone is supposed to take the opposition role in contract negotiations. Sadly, that frequently does not occur.

For me, his Che Guevara t-shirt is enough to keep him in the "rubber room" for life.
