President-elect Donald Trump plans to nominate Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-Ala.) to be attorney general of the United States, The Washington Post and other news outlets reported Friday. Sessions is a vocal opponent of marijuana legalization whose elevation to attorney general could deal a blow to state-level marijuana legalization efforts across the country.
Sessions said that “we need grown-ups in charge in Washington to say marijuana is not the kind of thing that ought to be legalized, it ought not to be minimized, that it’s in fact a very real danger.”
“Those who counted on Donald Trump’s reassurance that marijuana reforms ‘should be a state issue’ will be sorely disappointed.”
Personally I have been vocal about opposing it, but I respect the States rights after they vote to legalize it. Even here in Florida they legalized medical pot and many counties (Miami, Ft Lauderdale & Keys) have de-criminalized it (fines only), and I am OK with it.
It will be interesting to see if Sessions will use the Federal law to ban it. I think there is a good chance it will happen, since they are already trying to bully local LE to enforce Federal immigration laws, so why not drug laws.
Trump supports medical marijuana 100%. He seems to almost mock that its even in debate. Its one of the few things he's ever been completely consistent on. For recreational use he says it should be a States rights issue with the Federal Government staying out of it. I think the left is going to end up being very happy with his stance on marijuana. I don't think you'll have to worry about the heavy handed tactics of Eric Holder & the Obama Admin raiding legal dispensaries under Trump.
I believe Trump is a believer in state's right. Could be he will let the state's make their own decisions on the subject.
However, remember there is a lot of big business making billions off of keeping marijuana illegal. Big Pharma being the top one, prisons for profit, and a lot of federal people making their living sucking on the marijuana teat. How much influence they will have on Trump remains to be seen.

He said a lot of things during the campaign, and flip-flopped on many issues. Clearly his AG pick is anti-legalization, so the question is whether or not he will enforce Federal drug laws.
If it were still, say, only two states plus DC, they might be able to enforce federal law. But it's fully legal now in eight states plus DC, and medical is legal in some form in over half the US. That kind of progress can't be stopped.
I think there will be severe backlash against the federal government in states that have legalized it if they try to shut it down. Now that California and Massachussetts have legalized it, that adds more weight to the pro-legalization side. It isn't just a rogue state like Colorado anymore.
I really hope that don't shut it down. Thing is, you can't put anything past moralist Republicans.
