Student debt stifles economic growth. What are some ways a fiscally conservative Trump administration can tackle this problem, without putting tax payers on the hook through a complete bail out?
Why would he want to support student loans? It was the least-educated people of the country who gave him the most votes.
budgeting is a basic adult responsibility.
Don't borrow what you can't pay back.
Edit: So yes, it appears i do in fact know something Congress does not; how a budget works.
In that case, nobody should take out a student loan unless they are independently wealthy, because otherwise, students not gifted with psychic powers would have no way of knowing today whether they will have enough income to repay those student loans a few years down the road.
In that case, the taxpayers are going to pay the deadbeat's loans or the fed is going to continue printing money to pay them off.
The student loan debt is like the housing bubble.
Responsible people will get screwed by the irresponsible people.
How is that different from responsible taxpaying renters having their tax dollars redistributed to bailed out homeowners and even non-bailed out homeowners?
I would like to see a more European style higher education system, it just makes more sense. You pay nothing to study, and heck, some countries actually pay the student a stipend to study a field that has a shortage. And you don't get into a university unless you have proven to be able to handle university level work through good high school marks and exams. Think about all the students in the US who "try" university just to figure out they can't hack university level course work, and quit with a lot of debt and wasted taxpayer money. They could have been ushered into a trade, rather than stuck working at Walmart and collecting food stamps.

The European system would never work in the US because of radically unequal outcomes and disparate racial impact. In Europe, kids are rigorously tested at around age 10 (varies by country) and then tracked and schooled separately FOR THE REST OF THEIR EDUCATIONAL LIVES. The society chooses its winners at age 10. Let this sink in for a few moments.
Imagine how that would play out in the US. The wealthy suburbs with involved parents would dominate the university track.
I would suggest we don't allow student loans for about 80% of majors that are totally useless!! You want to be an engineer...you can get a loan. You want to be a doctor.....you get a loan. You want to major in South American studies.....sorry you are on your own!

Agree. That would solve most of the student debt problem right there.
Both of my niece and nephew got undergraduate tuition free, paid for through scholarship. But they owe about $400k for medical school debt. Their parents voted for Hilary, hoping to get away scott free from the student debt. Not one did they think it was fair for their kids to make $170k-$190k and pay about $30k-$50k in debt. They still have $120k per year to spend freely. But no, that's unfair for their kids. Their little snowflakes can't afford to live on that little money.
Have to be able to afford their modest $300 dinners and 10k vacations a few times a year. You and I should have to subsidize that!!
