Half of my ancestors were from France, the other half were native to this land. Should I be mad at myself for having taking my land? So few people in the USA are pure anything anymore. We're a nation of mutts. My French ancestors were kicked off their land in Nova Scotia by the English. Many lives were lost in that expulsion. Didn't happen to me more any of the relatives I knew so I don't care. I don't hold hated towards the English for something that happened long after all involved have since passed away.
What if 9/11 reoccurred and each time they bombed and invaded an American city it was celebrated with a feast until one day Hussein made 9/11 a national holiday. And somehow with time 9/11 became a story of gratitude and family. How would Americans feel? That's literally what happens every Thanksgiving for Native Americans. Privilege is when you can say "lets just focus on the positive and not think about that." That's the same privilege that was used when folks voted for Trump not thinking of race, sex, or the LGBTQ folks at risk. Don't ask how anymore...
Bad analogy. The Pilgrims were a religious group fleeing from another religious group. They did not come to the new world looking to conquer anybody. Thanksgiving was about gratitude. Still is.
What happened in subsequent years to the indigenous people as more European groups came in was a horror, but it has zilch to do with Thanksgiving.
I'm thankfull all that did happen in the past. It was well before my time so I feel absolutely no guilt at all. I am thankful that we have turned into a great country encompassing many resources and wonders in which to use and enjoy. I am thankful for this modern way of life in which cars, AC, insulated homes and modern grocery stores and shopping centers add to our convenience and enjoyment of life. I am thankful we don't have to rough it like those in the past had to. Again, no remorse for my ancestors conquering and laying claim to this country making it a much better place for all.
If it wasn't for the Europeans arrival several hundred years ago, imagine where we would be now and what our life would be like.
Remember, the Indians were invading and attacking other tribes as well so I don't buy into the "evil Europeans came and wiped out a peaceful existence in harmony with nature that those who came before had been enjoying for eons" that is such a popular addition to white guilt and feeling bad for what was done. I don't feel the least bit bad for happenings of 150 or more years ago! I'm thankful for what I have now!
After my dinner I went in the bathroom and said this prayer to god:
Thank you for this wonderful meal with my family..... I feel guilty eating this turkey,a creature you put here GOD.... Please dont look down on me for this,i didnt kill this poor thing...... I love you Jesus, god and whoever else is listening..
Have you ever met a Pilgrim who harmed a Native American on Thanksgiving?
