The Macy's at the mall where I shop has been losing business for years as more and more people (including myself) use Amazon to shop. The last time I was there (two or three years ago) the store had very few customers. J. C. Penney's seemed to be doing a little better. Just the retail business in the 21st century. Got nothing to do with Trump (or Obama).
You'll never pay more for something than you will in Macy's. Wal-Mart started all this and Amazon is finishing it. Now we're all told to patronize small local stores. There's only so much money to go around.
I'm a very devout Republican, yet I can't blame Obama for this. Macy's made the mistake of rebranding all of their "legacy" regional nameplates (Kauffman's, Hecht's, Famous Barr, The Jones Store, Burdines, Lazarus, etc.) to the Macy's nameplate. That took away any regional pride those stores may have had. Macy's is also tied at the hip to many dying malls (thanks to massively long lease agreements). Macy's is a mess due to inept management.
This bears repeating. Macy's issues have nothing to do with politics. In addition to their management mistakes, much of their clothing isn't much different in terms of appeal than what you can find at Target. For the higher end lines, why would you want to shop at Macy's for that, if you can go to Nordstrom (or in NYC, Bergdorf's, Lord & Taylor, etc.)? Housewares and other hard goods are better purchased online these days. Macy's needed to make major changes to keep up with the way retail sales were changing, and they didn't.
Macy's has always been a weird store for me because I'm not exactly sure where it fits in. Obviously a place like Saks takes the high end/luxury market, and Dillards/Belk takes the high end but affordable market. Macy's is slightly nicer than Kohls, but with way higher prices. Now that JC Penney has really turned their stores into nicer places, I guess most people see no reason to shop at Macy's.

We prefer to shop at Nordstrom because of their return policy. Also, my wife buys everything from them ONLINE. With free shipping and free return shipping, there is no reason to go to a mall and deal with the unwashed.
Damn Russians are working with Amazon to make Macy's and Sears go bankrupt.
You cannot let go that the Russian hacking helped Trump, can you? Here you are, still stewing about it and trying to minimize it in a subject that has nothing to do with Trump or Russia. Get over it. He won. Even with a little help from Russia, he still won. Be proud and own it and put that ego away.
I agree with those who say this has nothing to do with Obama.
Macy's has not changed with the times. Their management is to blame.
