Since there has been some publicity around the shooting recently, given that the 5 year anniversary was a couple days ago, it got me thinking - that incident was really the beginning of the end for the left. Instead of fighting against climate change, wealth inequality, the war on drugs, and things that most rational people could get on board with, the left (and I consider myself on the left) took a turn towards identity politics with incredibly divisive incidents that were sloppily reported on to create a narrative - a narrative that there's an epidemic of black people being murdered by white people and police officers.

This narrative is and was false when looking at the larger picture and statistics. It was driven purely by anecdotes. And yet anybody who pointed this out was called a racist, on the wrong side of history, etc. This identity politic/blm/social justice way of looking at the world does not stand up to critical thought. And so smart, skeptical people found themselves supposedly on the "wrong side of history." I myself was called a right winger for pointing these things out. And to me, this made it clear that the left was in trouble. I don't think it's a coincidence that Trump is now president...anyone agree?

Agree but it started before that. OJ Simpson got off because his attorneys pulled the race card. At that point it was obvious that the only thing that mattered was identity politics. Then there was the Michael Brown story. The left still hangs their hat on that one.

The shooting itself was just another encounter between two guys, both of whom thought they were bigger than they really were and possessed subpar IQs. I've been to dozens of scenes just like it.

Society's reaction, I would argue, fits entirely with the OP's theme. It became fodder for those with an agenda and, as usually happens, the victims didn't even know they were being used.

I'd say ramming Obamacare down everyones throat was the beginning of the end.
From that point forward Dems lost seats in every election.

Obama's election had nowhere to go but down because the man was not qualified to do the job.

I don't know if that is when it started, but I do agree that the left isn't doing itself any favors by continuing down that path. It also is only getting worse for them since they continue to march down the same path even when what they say doesn't hold up to reality backed by statistics etc...

Lots of liberals are being left behind.

The race card has been around for 200 years. the Civil war resulting in Jim Crow and the KKK going on to the 'Great Society' and 'welfare reform'. All the result of the democrats. Some are major racist issues and some used to keep minorities in check and under the democratic thump. Along with all the major wars of the 20th Century can be attributed to the democrats.

May be some legs to the OP. IDK. I think we've just gotten to a really silly place the last few years. This past election cycle just seemed to magnify it more for most people. I think identity politics is part of the problem, people aren't dealing with issues, but taking side via sound bits of information, information that is often biased in subtle and sometimes blatant ways.

People need to think more and get themselves informed via multiple sources. We have way way too many low informed people out there and scarily so at times.

I disagree. He got off because he was a rich celebrity who hired a legal team like few others who went against a poor prosecution team with a judge who wanted celebrity status.

Add to that a jury who enjoyed the circus.

Yep, all of the major U.S. wars in the 20th century—World War I, II, Korea and Vietnam—were entered by Democratic administrations. Harry Truman, a Democrat, is still the only world leader to use a nuclear bomb on a population.

And with the exception of World War II, where almost all anti-war sentiment collapsed after Pearl Harbor, these wars were entered over the objections of the left wing of the Democratic Party. But while the presence of that left wing has guaranteed that anti-war liberals rally to the Democratic side, it not yet stopped a Democratic administration from going to war.
