Example. Nursing Home Transition. A once middle class, now poor elderly person wants to go home, the family is willing to help but they work full time so they'll need help. If your income is above the income limit even by a penny, your application for help is denied. On the other hand, if you haven't worked much though-out your life and you have low SS. you'll qualify for all kinds of free help. Below is an example of all the free things you will get:
* Free nursing assistance at home for 20 hours a week
- Free Medical, including dr visits
- Free medication,
- Free medical equipment,
- Free home modifications (stair glider, scooter, bathroom modifications etc)
- Free food (EBT, free meals on wheels, and food bank),
- Free phone,
- Free Assistance with heating,
- Free rental assistance
- Free ambulance rides to dr office,
- Free taxi to other places
- on and on
While your application as a "once" middle class person who fell into poverty will be rejected and you get no help. The tax payer keeps getting hit up for higher taxes and if you're middle class you better just quit or save your ass off to pay your way.
Is there a link for this program? Could it be that it was cheaper to do it that way than to keep them in the actual nursing home at the taxpayer's expense?

Righties give more to charities that benefit themselves, the symphony, the opera, the schools their kids attend, their church...
Churches run food pantries, MoW in several areas, community outreach well-check programs for the elderly/disabled shut-ins, kids' programs for at-risk youth, and so on. Why balk at donating/volunteering to help those who are less fortunate? Why so cold-hearted? Give a little, or better yet, a lot. Karmic justice, and all that.
As for Amtrak, I live in the middle of the country, why should my tax dollar be going to pay for Amtrak? Your grandfather paid for meals on wheels. I know my mom has to or are you one of those that gets that free too.
Amtrak services the entire country, except for Alaska and Hawaii. It's not just a northeast rail line.

Yes, many of them did. But seriously, adult children and grand-kids in our modern society don't all live in the same neighborhoods where they grew up enabling them to run meals over to their loved ones. My dad, for example, lived 75 miles away and we set him up with Meals on Wheels. It's not free for recipients but it's godsend for those who need it.
MoW asks for the beneficiary to make a donation- whatever they can afford and choose. Some do. Most do not.
As important as the hot meal delivery is, it serves as a wellness check on the elderly.

What the article actually said was that the Development Block Grant of $3 billion will be cut. The grant funds Meals on Wheels among other programs like housing assistance and other community programs. I am unclear as to what percentage goes to Meals on Wheels.
I read somewhere that in 2013, 217 million was budgeted for nutritional meal delivery, I assume this is the Mo W program.
At any rate one delivered meal a day and someone poking their head in your door is not going to be the deal breaker between life and death or independence and a care facility.

Amazing how it's never really an investment to better the lives of the American people with infrastructure and social benefits, but all about defense/weapons, pro-corporations, and keeping "others" at bay all to the detriment of the American people, just cut everything else that keeps us in good shape and checked.
Whenever someone uses the word Investment to describe how the federal government should spend it's money, I get nervous. It's:
- time to move my wallet from my back pocket to my front pocket...to prevent the robbery.
- sure to make some connected person or persons wildly rich on the scheme.
- to make a class or group of people dependent on govt....thus enlarging the Socialist base.
