There own governor rejects single payer health-care, but begs Trump and the Republican not to go back to the good old 50% Medicaid reimbursement rate instead of the 95% today.
450 billion a year would only be a tax of about $35,000 a year as the state has about 12 million households.
California despite what videos appear on YouTube on healthy looking people has some major health problems.
I was stunned by unhealthy the state is in general when I visited. It certainly ain't the 1970s or 1980s YouTube videos these days.
It's true that there are lots of healthy people in Pacific Beach and Irvine but interior parts of the state and certain cities like Santa Ana and much of Los Angeles County one would think it was the deep south.
"He pointed out that the overall cost of medical care in California is equal to 18% of the state's gross domestic product, which would be about $450 billion".
And the UK can provide healthcare for over 60 million people for $188 billion (£150.6 billion, 2013 numbers) and that includes both government funded (NHS) and privately funded healthcare.
Germany spent $411.5 billion in 2013 to cover 80 million people.
California's population is just 39 million.
Maybe California has the wrong guy running things.

I think, costs are very expensive in US to start with. That looks like a major problem. I have received $550 bill for xray when hospital had some problem with verifying my insurance information. And another bill for some one who was reading my xray. Once I updated my insurance information, suddenly actual price reduced to $75 or change.

California though is the land of $85 an hour union nurses, seven-figure a year doctors and lavish hospitals in affluent areas that were build with debt.
I wonder what the doctors, nurses and others make in the U.K.
The population despite the reputation is very unhealthy outside of a few elite areas.
Well if America wasn't so god damn blood thirsty and didn't spend $600 Billion to kill others and get involved in other peoples internal affairs we could easily cover it.
Unhealthy people die young so too many fatties making it impossible to have UHC is just a common right wing myth.
Main problem with universal health care in a state is the massive numbers of red state refugees flooding the state. There are no good solutions to the red state refugees problem.
The OP just assumes that the insurance based for-profit system where hospitals are profit centers, where people dont go to the doctor because they cant afford it and where thousands of billing clerks are needed to administer the maze of different insurers would be just as cheap as a single payer system.
Their own governor rejects single payer health-care
Wait... What?... Why?... California has all those rich Hollywood and Music Industry people. And Silicon Valley. Why can't they afford single-payer health care for their residents?

Weren't they just talking about seceding from the Union? I mean if they're that well off...
